Just curious if anyone knows of a good place to get these chips and a reader. I want to experiment and tag some things for use with mentalism but the few sites I have been on seem to have readers the size of books and chips that are thick and quite large. I cannot seem to find the tiny chips and the pocket sized readers.

Can anyone give me any info on this. I know its a long shot, but with the creative minds in this forum, I figured this would be my best shot.

Thanks all!

One source is animal RF-ID.

Look for pet ids. These have been used for livestock and animals for a while.

http://www.pet-id.net/

or google RF ID for more choices.

Hey thanks a bunch. I think those chips are actually too big though. I did do a search and found some chips but they seem to only range in the 3-4 inch range and not the "feet" range.

any other suggestions?

Try contacting a company in the Dallas area called Axcess International. It's a publicly traded company. Symbol: AXSI.OB.

You might want to try TI (Texas Instruments http://www.ti.com). There are also many othercompanies out there that specialize in rfid , including casino chip manufacturers. You may want to try a google search for rfid.

The size of the rfid depends on whether or not it contains a battery or is passive (using energy from the reader). The smallest ones, unfortunately, will only have a rnage of a few inches. For more distance, you will need one containing a battery. By the way, rfids are not really "chips."

Hope this helps.

That is some useful info. I know there is a company out there I think Fabrice that uses rfid's. The thing is, I hear their chips have a range of 30 feet. Is this the battery type? By the way, how flat are the battery types? I cant imagine one fitting in between the layers of a playing card per say.

This has previously been discussed on the Café. Search for RFID and RF-ID.

I agree that it's worthwhile keeping up-to-date on this technology.

A few new companies had come out that sell rfid labels and readers for household items. I believe one of the companies distributes through sharper image (not brookstone). you can check those out and see what you see.

Additionally, many pharmaceutical companies are now using rfid on prescription bottles as a response to counterfeits. The rfid chips/labels are extrememly small and this is driving the per unit price down. I would expect chips and readers to become very cheap in the next couple years.

Reminds me of the Arthur C. Clarke quote: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishible from magic." The day is repidly coming when most of what we do as magicians will be easily accomplished by Joe Sixpack using hidden technology.

I find that comment to be false. A) it would be relatively expensive and B) nothing beats sleight of hand!

nah, prices are dropping fast already. most see the technology being expanded to tag every single item and using the rfid to expediate the check out procedure (imagine laying a bag on the counter, it being weighed and scanned [similiar to self-checkouts] in seconds with less possibility of error than human cashiers). As the technology becomes more and more widespread the price will drop dramatically (remember when computers used to cost $40k and people said the same thing [too expensive for more than a couple per city] or am I dating myself [not like anybody else would, lol]?).

I found at the library an interesting and practical book named:
RFID Toys: 11 Cool Projects for Home, Office and Entertainment
by Amal Graafstra
ISBN: 0471771961

The book shows nice projects using stuff you can easy buy.
Look at Amazon, I'm sure they have it as well.
Enjoy the journey!

It take a lot of time to make a device that works.
To have a reading distance that is long enough,
you must use Low Frequency chips, reading distance up to 15cm.
High Frequency chips only have a reading distance of 5 cm.

Take a look at my website: http://www.labcomagic.com -> Products-> Mental UFO II, a lot of time is used to make this reliable tool for magicians.

I soon release two new antennas, with a reading distance of up
to 20 and 30 cm. Which makes it even easier to work with.

Best Regards
