I followed Tommy at a TAOM Close up show. After he left the room, I stepped up to perform and remarked "what a great warm-up act!" The audience roared. Tommy, you were a great warm-up act and will truly be missed. A great man and a magical genius. Rest in peace my friend.

Man this really sucks. Its like a plague hit the magic community in the last year or so.
Billy McComb(82 year old comedy magician) Tommy Wonder(one of the best thinkers who ever lived) fooled every living magician Derek Dingle(creator of coin and card magic) Channing Pollack(originated the infamous dove act, and possibly the greatest card manipulator who ever lived with what he did) Gene Maze(specialized in gambling and card magic) John Bornstein(lots of gags with watches and things and did money magic and wrote a few books about it. each of these people took over the magic scene at one time and changed the way we all think about it. whose next..(as sad and depressing as that sounds. It only makes me think if the greater magic will still live on. It seems like its being taken over by so much more(internet, tv) |

Magic is going through a tough time, with the loss of all these greats. I havent had the honor to meet this great man, but I did get to appreciate his great work. He completed baffled me with his cups and balls. The way he thinks will live on through each of his effects as they inspire new ones. We musn't morn this loose, instead we should pass on his work to others to learn and appreciate his mind. We should perform his effects to other magi and let them know who created such wonderfull effects so he could live on through his magic.
R.I.P Tommy Wonder , a true master of our art! ~SIX~ |

I didn't know about his illness, I was stunned when I found out. A Shame.

Oh my God. This too is a huge shocker for me and an incredibly horrible moment for magic. Tommy Wonder was probably the single most influential magician as far as my own understanding of the art was concerned. Reading The Books of Wonder for the first time (and miraculously every time thereafter) was like rediscovering what this art was really all about. His philosophies not only challenge the magician, I think they challenge any artist in any field of entertainment, to put the art before the individual. I met and spoke with him a couple of times and each time, despite his genius and status, he was always very down to earth and spoke to me as if I were on the same level as he. He listened to an idea I had, kept it in confidence, and even mentioned that when I was ready, he could work with me on it (an effect based on one of his creations). It's a shock to know that day won't come.
This is yet another dark moment in what's been a series of dark moments in recent years, as we have lost so many. Too many. But I agree, this is the time to celebrate an extraordinary career and life...and be grateful he shared with us before he moved on. |

The Books of Wonder were the first books I read ...put them down , and instead of learning a trick from them ..I went and worked on my own stuff... very inspirational stuff...... They were instant classics ... I hope someone publishes more of his writings.....

R.I.P. Mr. Wonder.
May God Bless your family in this, a most trying time. I can only imagine what the scene is like in Heaven right about now, with all the Masters we've lost recently... All I can say is this: Heaven is having a Magical party right about now. For those of us who are left behind? Remember the George Jones song, "Who's gonna fill their shoes?" The chorus goes something like this: "Who's gonna fill their shoes? Who's gonna stand so tall? Who's gonna fill the Opry? Or play the Wabbash Cannonball?" Now I know that this song applies to Country and Western singers/legends, but it can be easily applied to the world of Magic. So, seeing as we are losing so many Legends in our Craft, it is TIME for those of us who are serious in this Art to step up to the plate and CARRY ON with the example that has been set by our outstanding predessors. Tommy's lesson to us all? Create! Think! ENJOY what you DO! Sincerely, Prof. Piper

The man was a legend of MAGIC. No one like Tommy. A true great that will be missed by the magic World. Rest in peace Tommy.
There is one thing better than magic and roller coasters. That is doing magic on roller coasters!

I asked Richard Kaufman at Genii about having a "Ghost of Christmas Past" type section in the December issue to share good memories of those who've left us this year.
Yeah it hurt to lose Mike Bornstein, Gene Maze, Alex Elmsley, Derek Dingle... in such a short span. And demographics tell the attentive that this will not be the only such year. All the more reason to appreciate our elders more while they are around to enjoy.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Tommy Wonder was one of my favorite magicians. His magic was innovative and creative to say the very least, and legendary is a word that suits him better!
I wish I could have met him in person... Condolences to his family and friends. Tommy's probably sitting around the magic table in the sky amazing Houdini, Malini and making Dai chuckle... Best, Chris |

The first time I met Tommy Wonder was at an IBM convention in England where he was demonstrating for a Dutch magic dealer called Theo Tinnerman. Later on I had the pleasure to see him perform his close-up magic and had to watch on four separate occasions, just to work out how he loaded the bag into the Chop Cup. His misdirection was not just good it was brilliant. Over the years we met up at many conventions in Europe and also the USA and when I was the magic consultant for Wayne Dobson’s close-up TV show Tommy was the guest artist. His unique style and charm helped to make this a memorable classic. Tommy Wonder was a true ambassador of the magic world and will be sadly missed by the many people who new him.

I got to work a convention with Tommy Wonder some years back and it's the only time I received a standing ovation when I walked into the close-up room. Of course, just like Lonnie Chevrie mentioned a few posts ago, this was because Tommy was just walking out! You see, I'd drawn the short straw and had to follow Tommy four rooms in a row! Later that night we hung out for hours playing pool, drinking beer, and talking magic. I'll never forget it. Goodbye Tommy...

Tommy, may God bless you and your family.Thank you for all you have done in magic. You were second to none.Instead of being another clone, you created millions of clones, who wanted to be you.You ,like Dai Vernon took magic to another level and made the people believe in magic again.
If Tommy had not made Books/Visions of Wonder(I believe) most of his effects would have been lost-just like Hofzinser.Thank you for disclosing your methods and your amazing theory. You will be sadly missed. AJ |
