I've been playing w/ this for awhile now, but have never performed it. Basically, in my view, it's a cute idea that needs a routine. Here's what I've got. Feel free to chime in, borrow, brainstorm, etc. The idea is "When I'm Emperor, things will be different..."
"How so?" asks the spec. "Well, when I'm emperor..." Example 1 Example 2 "Oh, and these little key rings will be a whole lot easier to operate" Do the routine. I've got my own. As they are being taken apart, etc. "But the truth of the matter is that I'm NOT emperor, so none of this is possible." As rings are handed over. I'd like the Examples above to be simple, humorous and hit home. Ideas I've played with but don't like are the following. "When I'm emperor, Starbucks will come out of a tap on my sink!" "You know that plastic packaging that you need a crow bar to open? When I'm Emperor.. GONE!" "'You're call is important to us. Please continue to hold' will be abolished." You see, these all are really terrible. Can you think of any simple, real world annoyances that you'd like to abolish, fix or improve? Any thoughts? Thanks. |

I agree. It's an expensive cute idea that needs a routine.
You've alredy surpassed what's on the 3RC DVD. Keep at it!

Thanks. But I still need some help.
FWIW, when I have tested out my "in process" routine for friends and family, their eyes nearly popped out of their heads. That is why I've stayed after it. It is very strong and visual. How about another angle: "Some people have aske me what I would do if I could do REAL magic. Well, I'd probably use my powers to solve some real life problems...like these key rings..." But I like to end w/ a tag line of some kind. I'd like to end w/something like "But I can't work real magic, so none of this is possible!" Not sure that is the right line, but you get the idea. Any comments? Thanks. |

I agree, I've got the effect and the dvd gives no tips for patter. I think the trick itself is pretty stunning as well. Maybe an approach would be to say that you have figured out most of the secrets to making a woman happy. For example- women really hate breaking a nail, which they are almost certain to do trying to open up one of these. So, I decided to use magic to solve this annoying problem. After years of research, I have developed a way to do this! Oh, the women love it! (perform 1st link of rings). In fact, one day I did this for a lady, and next thing I know, she was my wife! (While performing link second time). The only problem is, now my wife told me she doesn't want me penetrating for other women! (while performing third link.) I got mad and immediately and started taking my rings off (no punn intended- now unlink rings one at a time 1,2,3 without stalling). She then made a compromise and said "I'll let you as long as I can watch"!!!!!!!!!!
Well fellow magicians, HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES! That's obviously an adult crowd theme. If you substitute "performing it" for the word "penetration" then the effect is clean enough for the whole family. I need to write this down. sounds pretty good to me! By the way, I am gloating just a little bit. Finally, a useable patter. Enjoy! |

The DVD comes with a bunch of extra card tricks. Probably becuase it was noticed that the provided routine was quite weak; if it can even be called a routine. Speaking for myself, I already know enough card tricks. To me that was not a bonus. I would have been better off if they'd tossed in a few slices of bacon. At least it would be something I could use.
The routine is really just a few moves thrown together on an expensive DVD with common keyrings and a poorly made gimmick to justify the added expense. And the notion of "completely examinable" was/is a marketing ploy and just untrue. If you compare the quality of this DVD with that of the Ninja Ring DVD the comparison is laughable. Especially for the price. The Ninja Rings might be an unlikely choice for some: those that are just doing magic as they are with friends, "street magicians", etc. (For instance, I don't see David Blaine-esque types doing the ninjas), but if you see yourself actually performing at any sort of genu-wine "gig" at all, The Ninja Rings DVD gives you a professional routine that people will appreciate for its elegance and beauty, and a routine that is easy to see from a distance which is always good.

Frankly, Frank, I thought the 3-Ring Circus was JUNK. As was that dopey trick with a little metal cup he put out. I threw mine away.

Actually, when I first starting messing w/ the key rings on the couch, my wife, who hates magic, looked over...then got a little closer, trying to figure out what was going on. Same thing happened on a family vacation w/my father in law. I wasn't really performing, just messing with linking and unlinking. It really is visual and people really think it's pretty cool.
I don't really know how a working magician might use them. I'm a serious hobbyist. But I'm determined to come up with a routine that is something other than a straight narration, and give it a go. I think it has potential to really be a fun effect. John, I think, may be on to something. I'm sure there can be a "clean" version too. why not pun it up a bit? Anyone else? |

Frank starsini , thanks for the insight.
when I read several reviews about three ring circus it struck me when I saw that 100% examinable part. I drove myself crazy trying to come up with such a gimmick. or at least trying to imagine it. you made things a lot clearer. about the card tricks , well , lately I have been focusing too much on cards anyway. so no more card tricks for me either. I agree about the ninja rings. I ordered mine one week back and they have to arrive any day now. shoot's routine impressed me very much. they may not be examinable but like you said , it is very visual and hard hitting . (i don't know why people bother so much about handing everything out for examination). anyway , for someone doing street magic , maybe three ring circus will be of some use. all the best -Matt

Linking the key rings is cute, and that's all, IMO...
He lied saying the key rings are examinable..(unless you count the sw**ch) Maybe he thought we would forgive him if he added a few card tricks to dvd.... ..

I'll agree with all of you on the fact that the dvd is garbage. But, the linking and unlinking of the rings is pretty strong. I'm going to test it out using the routine with the patter I supplied earlier in this thread within the next week or so in a restaurant gig. I'm pretty sure It's going to kick'em right in the cajones. I'll keep you all posted. No punn intended.
P.S. later down the road, I'll give you a cleaner version of the patter if I think of something hilarious. I do think if you leave out the word penetration, that it is clean enough. |

I like Yes & No too, but I also think the patter is only half-way developed. It could be a much more interesting presentation. Rather than "I have a prediction that I'll show you in a few minutes...."
Of topic now, but it's still part of 3RC.... Off the top of my head, using John's theme of pleasing women, you could talk about how there are 52 weeks in a year, and 52 cards in the deck. We married guys know that a "yes" every week is not a common occurrence...but if you get lucky, so to speak..... Just brainstorming...and a bit off topic. Sorry for wandering. John, let us know how it went in the restaurant gig. |

I saw this performed at a "close-up" session at the SAM convention earlier this month. From the fourth row, it didn't look like much. This has got to be real "close-up" magic to be as effective as it can be.

Truth be told. I think they misled people with the advertising. As far as 'examinable' goes, I question that with ANY effect that states as much, especially if there's a gimmick. There's always some work to do for that examination.
As I used to tell people when this first came out, don't even try to make a routine out of it. Take advantage of its one strong point. It's quite visual. I don't carry this around anymore, but when I did it was only used on the offbeat. I only did 3 link and 2 unlinks. I basically only used it for hecklers and people who just had to see more magic. It was never, NEVER, done first or as a showcase piece. As a result, the need to come up with patter was null and void. To avoid the entire examination process, I used to bring the rings out already connected to my set of keys. I'd pull the rings out, thread the 'key' off of the ungimmicked ring and then thread the ungimmicked ring off the one holding my keys. I don't know if anyone has printed that, but it justed felt logical/natural to do it that way. After that, I popped the ring on, slowly, and took it off almost the same way. I then asked for their key ring, with keys still on it, and popped both on. This was followed by Capehart's Closer leaving them with their keys, and me with my rings. To paraphrase Denny Haney, it's only worth it if you use it. I have benefited from this DVD by way of the effect itself and the bonus material. I do the Kung Fu Coin Trick quite often, and the Yes/No effect. Therefore, I can't honestly say the DVD was "bad". However, I totally understand where Frank, and others are coming from. Once I got a set of actual linking rings, I couldn't put them down. It's too much fun. I'm about to research some other routines(I'm currently doing Chris Capehart's) to expand my knowledge, so I can come up with my own routine. |

I like this routine and have gotten good responses (disclaimer - I'm an amateur, not a pro). I have found at the end of the trick, I can "ring" in a normal key ring pretty easily. For me, this is a quickly performed trick. My patter is that key rings are like some people I know - they're tightly wound. But just like tightly wound people can get along with each other and mate, with help of the right type of relaxation and a little bit of magic, so too .... can key rings - at which point they become linked. Then I say when two mated tightly wound key rings learn to relax, they can have enough space to do their own thing (unlink) - the perfect relationship.
Anyway, it has worked for me. BTW, the gaff is very easy to make, with a good vise, hacksaw, and superglue. kerpa, a/k/a Michael Miller Chicago area
