I am considering opening my show by entering from the audience and performing misers dream as I make my way up to the stage. I think this would suit my style. Nevertheless, I am kind of nervous about trying this out. It takes me a long time to introduce new routines.
Have many people done this in the past? Can it be done to good effect? If there are famous magicans who have done this I would be interested in hearing about it. Or, if anyone does this I would like to hear about your experiences. Are there advantages or disadvantages to this approach? Thanks Simon

Normally, it is good manners to introduce yourself first, otherwise someone will stand-up and escort you out of the place for showing off in an event you were not invited to attend.
This is a bad idea as I see it, especially since you are not famous and know one knows who you are. If you are famous, then they all know who is coming down the isle. |

I DISAGREE WITH wmhegbli TOTALLY.
nobody knows me but for me it works. sometimes it is even better then to be introduced by a mc. I usually make some noise so the attention is directed toward me and where I come from. the audience will get the idea that you are one of them and go on to perform. most performers come on the stage with an attitude. feeling that they stand well above the audience. it show guts coming from the audience and it makes a nice different entrance I say go for it! |

He runed over the chairs in to the stage... A little note: When you enter in stage, even if you are a star, the audience should realize that you are a magician, so you should have someone introducing you, first. I tell that, because the audience don't guess who you are... and can think "what is this????!!!!" of course there are exceptions... Good Luck |

I also enter from the audience any chance I can get.People are there to see a performance so it is not much of an issue for me as they are clear the sow has started and that I am the magician performing. Who else in the audience wears a red custom tux jacket. hehe
I also do this because I want to immediately break down the invisble barrier or wall that separates the audience from the magician. By entering from the audience, I do this immediately and it allows the audience to really understand me easier and get interactive with the show right from the start. Kyle |

Back to the original question, I have only seen one performer carry this off..John Calvert. His personality and presence lets me him carry the audience the minute they see him. Not many can do this. If you can pull this off, you are something special. John does his cigarette act on the floor once he reaches the center of the house. Tammy usually comes down from the stage to catch the cigarettes. It is a very hard technique to master but if you can you will have something no one can ever steal.

It doesn't matter how you hit the boards. In any event, style and authority is the key.

I performed misers dream as my opener tonight for the first time! I was performing on stage and it wasn't practical to enter from the audience but misers dream worked great as an opener!!!!
It went really well! I have fallen in love with misers dream. People applauded as I plucked coins from the air and I could even hear someone say "where are they all coming from?". The more I study magic the more I fall in love with the classics! Misers dream has virtually no set up, it is visual and has a great audio element. I am keeping this as my opener! I m going to try doing it from entering from the audience as well. Thanks everyone for the feedback and encouragement on this thread too! BTW, my routine was a combination of stuff I had learnt from Jeff McBride and John Carney. Great stuff. I hope to work on my acting for this effect and really sell it!

Congrats on your show and your miser's dream routine. It sounds wonderful. I think you could enter from the audience it you play it theright way. Have some music play and then a magical voice over comes on to present you. You then come from the back of the audience going, "exscuse me, pardon me.. oh so sorry to bump you." That sort of thing gets them to notice you are in the audience and having fun. It engages them right away.
You then stop and notice something, "oh escuse me sir, sorry but I noticed you had this behind your ear. Thanks you kindly" You continue as you make your way up to the stage as music keeps on playing. You reach the stage and bow to the audience as you motion for them to watch. You reach up into the air and grab a hand full of air. You then shower a bunch of coins right onto the bucket as the music ends. Your opening verbal line from the stage could be something funny and clever and perhaps as simple as, " I just want to thank all of you for your spare change. You see, I need cab fare for the ride back." It is simple but gets a laugh. Now keep in mind this is just a very vague idea and what you do must suit your character and personna on stage. However, entering from the audience immediately breaks that wall between you and your audience and I feel it engages them early on in an interactive way. Kyle

Simon,
Let us know how it goes for you and what reaction you get from it as well as if it changes the people's reactions towards you early on in the performance. The best idea is to simple try it and see what happens when you do. Best of luck to you. Kyle

This reminded me of when I was little and I went to see Cirque Du Soleil for the first time. About ten minutes before the show started, some of the performers came out into the audience and began playing (for lack of a better word) with audience members seated in the aisles - doing silly things with their ties or making them pull up their socks, however old I was, it was great fun.
I can see enormous potential for walking through the audience and plucking coins from the air, or from the audience members themselves. I say go for it. It might also be comical if the MC is trying to introduce you, expecting you to come from backstage only to find you messing around in the aisles with your coin bucket. Not sure what your style is when you perform, it may not work for you. Good luck with it James |
