How many coins in total does it hold? Is there a space for a single coin on the bottom?

I have no idea what you bought. Good luck with it. A standard Okito box can hold 4 or more coins on the inside. It has one lid. The bottom of the box is smooth with no recess. The bottom of the box should be heavy, thicker than the sides. Johnson Products makes a nice one in plain brass.
