Steve Fearson presented a simple mind-reading effect on a video (can't remember the name of the effect or the video!?!) that gets a big reaction. Give the volunteer the four aces, have them mix the cards, then pick one out and put it down on the table. The other aces are placed on top of them, and then the volunteer picks up the aces and mixes them again. The mentalist finally takes the cards, and turns them over one by one until the volunteer's ace is reached. Simple and direct, as long as you motivate the separation of the selected card and then adding the other aces again.

The deck is cut in half (roughly) and each half is given to two spectators.
The spectators are each told to shuffle their cards as much as their want and then spread them face up in front of them. The magician looks at each spectators face up cards (to memorise them). The magician then looks away while the spectators pick a card each from their spread and give it to the other spectator. The spectators insert the other persons cards into their own spread any where they want, they can pick up their cards and respread them if they want just so it isn't obvious that any cards are sticking out. The magician looks at each spread and picks out the cards that have been swapped. The spectators can shuffle their cards after inserting the other spectators cards if they want, but sometimes it's better to keep that addition in reserve in case you want to repeat the trick and make it more impressive. Completely self working, no gaffs or gimmics, or photographic memories required. And the spectators will not see any obvious difference between their respective spreads like one having all Reds and the Other All Black or one having All Odd and the other having all even. The swapped cards don't stand out in any noticible way. That's my favourite self worker. -Richard |

Hi again, Richard! I remember seeing this effect, or something similar, but when I tried it I couldn't work out how to handle the face cards cleanly. Does your method handle them, or do you tell the spectators "Don't choose something easy for me to remember, like a king, queen or jack."?
I really wanted this to work, and thought of some very complicated refinements to deal with the face cards, but I couldn't devise anything really workable. Any pointers to your approach? -Phil in KC |

Hi Phil,
I'm not sure what method you saw that had a problem with the face cards. With my method they can freely pick any cards they like, and there's nothing to conceal. I'd like to post the method here but I love this trick so much, and it's the only one I know that regularly fools magicians, so I'd prefer not to broadcast it too much. I feel stupid talking about it in these terms because it's such a simple method, I'm sure it's as old as the hills. I've been doing it since I was in school. You'd think we were discussing a great levitation or something.... What I'll do is I'll PM some of our more learned fiends on here and one of them may be able to tell us where this trick is in print. If it's in print I'll post the details. I sincerely doubt it's even remotely original. -Richard Posted: Jun 30, 2006 5:46pm I should have said learned friends, but learned friends' works too. -Richard |

Thank's, Richard! I'd like a reference to this. The version I learned was from Here's How by Frank Lane -- I looked it up -- but as I said, it fails when the exchanged cards are face cards.

Premonition by Bob Solari. You can find it at the http://www.thetrickery.com
It's a good self worker and at the end of the trick the spectator can choose one of the remaining two different cards with no force. Your prediction is always right. |

Tbaer, I wonder if you mean the Eddie Joseph effect. At least, that's the only Premonition I could find on The Trickery's website. I checked the four pages of Solari effects, but there wasn't one called Premonition.
Incidently, the description on the website didn't match your comment. This version has one card missing from a pack -- the one announced by the spectator -- and the magician produces that card from his pocket, saying he had a "premonition", hence the name. There aren't two cards to deal with, as far as I can tell. -Phil in KC |

Further Than That by J.W. Sarles published in the original Pallbearers Review and many other places (with minor "improvements" IMO).
It is easy to do, easy to set-up and incorporates at least 3 climaxes; appears to require a lot more skill than it actually does; and possibly most important, those fortunate enough to see you perform will really enjoy it! |

Thanks guys these are some great effects. I have been doing a Scarne effect a lot lately. I can't find the name and get back to you guys.

I just remembered a "favorite" that I don't do -- but wait, I'll explain. It's Charles Gauci's Diabolical -- the magician selects a card, and then the spectator selects a card, and they match. Then the effect is repeated a second time, proving it wasn't a fluke. Self-working, and packs a wallop, though angles can be an issue.
So why don't I do it? Because my daughter does it, and I don't want to compete with her. Yes, I could do it at venues where she won't ever appear, but I just make it a rule that I don't do the effects she does -- there's plenty of magic to choose from! -Phil in KC |

Do as I Do Extra- May not be all time favorite but pretty close. I haven't done in quite a while but came to mind for some reason. Found it in the pink Ganson book. The fist kick is when both cards match as with standard "Do as I do". Each cut decks in two piles. Both have same number of cards in pile #1 of their respective decks, amazing. If that wasn't enough you turn over the cards on top of each pile and your top cards match the spectators top cards. Just floors them.
I have a red deck with an old Victorian drawing of a little girl with her dog. The other deck is blue with a boy and his dog. I tell a haunting story of the twins that did everything together even after death. Rick |

There is also a "Premonition" by Bob Solari, but that is found only (I think) in a set of his lecture notes called "Cunning Stunts," also sold by the Trickery; it is not sold as a separate effect, I don't think. Incidentally, there's a summer sale at the Trickery right now -- through tomorrow, July 7, 2006, most of their stuff is 20% off to registered members of the site, so now would be a good time to get those lecture notes, or whatever. (No, I don't work for the Trickery! I'm just considering buying some items from them for myself by tomorrow.) |

Favorite self working effects :
1 - Vanished or Gone by Peter Duffie and can be found in Effortless Card Magic. 2 - The Lazy Man's card Trick - Harry Loraynes in Close-Up Card Magic. Rennie
The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

My Favorite "semi-automatic" card effect is what I call "Destiny Poker". This is my own concoction of magical effects/plots. One effect is a card game (in this case Poker) played between the magician and spectator - the magician always wins. The other effect is a prediction.
"Destiny Poker" is a twist on these concepts:A spectator randomly "predicts" which game (among 3 or 4 games) is the magician going to win or lose and writes it on a piece of paper and keeps it in a safe place. This is to be revealed after the games are played. The games are played and the games are predicted to 100% accuracy! No threads, magnets, sleights or other tools.

Trilogy by Brian Caswell has to be one of the best self-workers around but is rarely mentioned in these pages because it is a SUPERB mentalism routine and often gets mentioned in the "Workers" section. But it is a self worker!

Devastation by Geoff Williams
That effect is powerfull in a sence were it can be use as a card effect or as a mental effect, depending on your style and on your presentation. The spectator as the cards in hands for almost the whole time it take to do the effect. There's a lot of shuffling and a lot of free choices going on during that effect. It's just great!!! I also love the Random Sample Shuffle-Bored by Simon Aronson (same effect as Rain Man from Lennart Green, with a different presentation). I love the fact that Aronson uses a little booklet for is presentation. That is probably my favorite effect to perform right now. It's just to amazing!!! Thank you Simon for that one! |
