I saw a trick at the magic castle and I really want to learn it. It involved producing a bowling ball from a folded up paper bag. When it dropped to the floor you knew it was a real bowling ball. Where can I find this trick. I tried searching but couldn't find it.

I use this in my touring show currently- as my opener. On a blank stage; with just a paper bag- this trick is the most talked about. I've been told that everything else was great in the show, but THIS particular piece baffled the most.
Andrew Mayne is an awesome guy. I don't shop for magic often anymore, but his creative magic is something I always look forward to seeing more of. This particular effect is one of many on his DVD. Each piece on the DVD is equally amazing- just the uniqueness speaks volumes. I totally recommend his products- knowing that I can do this effect; plus more of his; anywhere in the the world and totally blow people's minds- is in my opinion worth it beyond question. I travel constantly now- and all that's needed for this effect is: a bowling ball- and a paper bag. Voila. It's an 'audience tested' highlight of my show- hope you have fun with it too! best regards, Matt Tomasko

I also have used this effect with great success. I now do a different version, instead of a bowling ball, I pull out a full glass of water, after flipping the bag upside down.

Does Andrew Maynes version enable you to fold up the bag at all?, cheers.

I have heard that he did the trick for Philosophy students to show them how the mind can be confused by the senses or the other way around but it may be hearsay.
As for the question about it being folded the answer is yes but I do not think it can be displayed flat. |

No, Mayne doesn't fold up the bag. But he does turn it upside-down, and then releases it.

In the Mayne version, the paper bag CANNOT start out folded. Like Donrodrigo says, the bag can seem empty and be handled as if it was empty (turned upside down, etc). But you cannot unfold a flat bag, then produce the bowling ball.

However, with some thought, modification, and practice, you could begin with the bag folded.

Don't know if it is useful to discuss this 2 years after the original posts, but just to clarify... Mayne doesn't fold the bag, but that is also not what I said. If you know and do the effect, you will know that it is possible, like mentioned above, to have it folded. But it can not be displayed flat. More would expose the method.

I wish I could give you the history of this effect, but it's been around in one form or another for at least fifty years... Probably a hundred!
I remember seeing it in a magic book for kids from the '60s. Maybe one of our resident magic historians could shed a little more light on the subject? There is nothing new under the sun.

Mr. Mayne, you probably have access to more old books than I do. Your knowledge of old illusions is very impressive!
PS- I love your product line, very cutting edge!

Anyone know other forms of this trick? Might be the same question everyone else doesn't know the answer to either!

There is the bowling ball out of the briefcase trick. (Tenyo has a close up version of this...)
The shoe-sized "rock out of the shoe" trick. The classic "hat load". These are all variations on the "object out of improbably-sized location" theme, but all are technically different tricks.

I've seen the close up version! Looks very funny! Maybe you could get a Ken doll and have him as your magical mascot, standing on your table.
Lol! |
