Hi there.
I don't understand - from time to time I am unabled to visit the Cafè, and when I return - I have a PM in my inbox. When I click the icon - there is no PM's there. I know that you have a "timer removal system", where after so and so many days/hours/months or whatever - the messages is removed. But why is it so? If we are allowed to have up to 60 PM's, shouldn't we decide what PM's we want to keep or remove? I mean - even PM's in the Savebox gets deleted... PM's specifically marked for keeping. With all respect, Samuel

When you log on and the PM icon is flashing but nothing's there, it's usually due to a broadcast message that was posted and removed in between your visits. In some cases it could also be from a normal PM, if your visits are more than 60 days apart.
We currently use the removal system to try to keep the overall size of the PM database at a reasonable level. We're considering leaving "saved" messages alone, but haven't made a decision on that yet. If there's something you really want to save, just copy it to a text file or use any other method to save it on your own computer. I know many people are doing that now.

I know at least one site that makes it easy to keep them; they have a link to e-mail the PM to yourself. Much more direct than copying and pasting.

Any chance you could either put it back or send me the messages? Anyway why have a 'save' box with a limit if we csn't use it. My vote is to keep 'saved' messages and not delete them, otherwise change the title to 'another folder' so as to stop misleading us. As you can tell I'm quite upset by this.

With respect it's a bit late telling me this after you've erased my 'allegedly' saved messages. I had stuff in there that I wanted to keep, hence saving it. The PM system was redesigned with all the enhancements you see now in 2005. Members were sent messages describing the new processes and requirements and these guidelines were set up in the FAQ area. I've attached a link to that area. It clearly states that all PM's will be deleted after 60 days including the saved box and that you should save any messages you want permanently to your hard drive. So I would say it is not a little late to inform you, it just that you are a little late in reading the rules and updates. In any event, once a PM is deleted, we cannot reestablish it. As Gene mentioned, a change is being looked at in regard to the save box and if and when it's made, all of the members will be notified. Quote: ALL PM Topics will be deleted automatically after 60 days of the date of the last message in the topic (includes Staff messages). This includes any topics moved to the Savebox. It is the member's responsibility to save or print any important information prior to its automatic or untimely deletion. The Magic Café cannot be held responsible for lost information, either by automatic deletion or system error.

Dave,
Thanks for the fast response. Firstly, it's acmp not ACMP. Again I feel the need to put my vote in for actually saving PM's in the save box rather than deleting them. The current system is misleading, even if you do state in the much removed FAQ area that this is the default behaviour. Should you either wish to keep the system as it is OR enter a protracted debate on the subject then maybe a note in the savebox telling users that items here are simply re-filed in a different area and not saved. I am trying to keep this civil, but I am really hacked off by this. I understand that the FAQ details this behaviour and as such TMC consider this to be my problem, but this is unhelpful IMO. I think JesterMan had a good idea with the 'email it to yourself' link. I'll stop ranting now and just sit quietly in the corner.

There are several ideas that came up about the PM system. The email to self option is a new one. Consider it noted. Redesigning the PM system isn't a top priority, though I've seen a need to do it for some time now. When the time comes I'll post an announcement topic and send a broadcast PM.
Stay tuned to this channel for further developments.
