You could vanish a beer bottle when you talk about how quitting drinking.

Who is the show for. Adults, teenagers, elementary school kids? The easiest way would be to decide what you want to say as a message and then tailor effects around it.

Your topic is near and dear to me-
Some ideas- -Siberean chain escape with patter along the lines of how drinking and drugs will get you into a pair of these but not using will help you "escape" that trouble. -Professor's nightmare (equal/unequal ropes) with patter along the lines of all people being different and unique but when they use, they all end up looking the same... -Vanishing milk pitcher but use tea as whiskey and make the problem disappear... -Card transposition or color changing card where you explain to people that they cannot trust their senses if they have been under the influence... -Cut and restored rope...cut rope illustrates being cut short in life because of using but they can be restored with the right way of thinking... Good luck. Hope your routine comes together well. Sounds like a great theme. |

Isn't it funny that you never have to encourage someone to start drinking or using drugs, but it takes quite a bit of effort to help them quit?

I remember once when I was in elementary school a magician came and did an anti-drug/alcohol show. I remember his theme was "Hip to be Square" (and, naturally, he played the Huey Lewis & the News song...) and his last trick was squaring the circle. Cheesy, but it worked, I suppose.

I remember seeing a magician perform a torn and restored news paper with an anti-drug message. The plot was that your life is much like this news paper. Everything is put in order and it's easy to read. But when you use drugs your life is torn to pieces (paper is torn). Patter about how the torn newspaper is hard to read and associate that to what happens to your life when you use drugs. Then talk about if they or someone they know use drugs that they can always get help and put their life back together. I thinks it a pretty good routine.
On a side note. I perform my trick Outsmokin' with an anti smoking theme but I do it in a more comical way. I've had a couple of magicians tell me they used it to actually make an anti smoking message for kids. I don't know exactly how they presented it but I suppose you could use it as an ice breaker or an introduction to talking about these issues. The trick can get a few laughs and grab there attention. Then you can talk about the dangers of smoking. Just a thought. Ron Jaxon |

When I used to do magic for small kids birthdays (5-7), I would start out by hiding a small sheet of flash paper in my hand (folded an clipped between my fingers, palm side.) I would then light a cigarette and puff a lot of smoke. I'd talk about how they shouldn't smoke, because it was a nasty habit. I'd puff again, making a lot of smoke and start coughing and telling them that it wasn't good for them. I'd say, "Cigarettes make you cough... make your lungs REAL hot..." At that moment, I'd touch the flash paper to the end of the cigarette and toss it into the air. Then I'd put out and say, "I'd better put this out... it's too dangerous!"
Of course, this was years ago before anyone ever heard of 'second-hand smoke.' Today it might be more inapropriate to light a cig in someone's home without their prior knowledge. Dave

Why do the effects have to be part of the message?
Do kids learn when they are being entertained? Is it possible that the effects could be so strong that the message never comes through in the way it was intended? When a person is in suspense, is laughing, or being amazed, does abstract thought occur? What must a speaker do to create a lasting impression of an object lesson? These are some of the questions I ask myself before adding magic to my lessons and group studies. Certain things must occur in the brain before it is willing to retain information, and I wonder, in trying to match effects to the message whether you are doing the message justice. MagikDavid has a great example. It works. But if you don't have the right fit, and all the elements in place, then you message won't gel. In fact, entertaining magic can actually confuse people! Sometimes the magic is best reserved as transition material, to segue between message blocks. I know this doesn't solve your problem, but it may give you food for thought. |

Hi Onebark, thanks for your reply. Actually research shows that people learn better when they are engaged and having fun in the process and since the majority of people are visual learners as long as the magic is in the proper syntax and flows, why not? And yes some magic should be a bridge or as a state changer. Like anything else, it comes back to the finese and skill of the facilitator, if the audience doesn't get it all the magic tricks in the world won't do any good and you are right it will overshadow the message. I do agree that the magic and message has to be in the proper context. By the way who is MagikDavid?

Dennis,
I am the world-renouned MagikDavid... well, not quite world-renouned.... maybe city-renouned... Okay, Okay, my family knows me well. Actually, I posted just prior to onebark's post. Been doing magic over 50 years. I don't do many shows nowadays, but I've done many kids shows in the past. Some had messages... and some not. Most messages given to small kids, involved safety. For instance, when I used a kid from the audience, I would always give them a pack of M&M's for helping me (with parent's prior approval.) Before I would hand them the bag, I'd say, "Since I'm a stranger, you should only take this bag of candy if you mom or dad says it's okay... so why don't you ask her if it's okay." The kid would turn around to see his mom, who would then nod. Another example is... I used a chick-pan and say, "I'm going to pop some popcorn. Problem is, I only have ONE kernel... so I'll have to use a little magic." I'd throw the kernel in the pan, then squirt a little magic popping oil (lighter fluid)... then light it with a match. As it would burn, I'd ask, "Are you kids allowed to play with matches or fire?" The whole room would say, "NOOOOO." I'd say, "That's right... you should only let your mom or dad make popcorn this way." I always tried to be cognitive of how impressionable small kids were. So, I would interject the appropriate message, whenever needed. The parents were always very pleased (which usually resulted in more bookings.) I know this is not too relevant to your situation, but maybe it will be a little more food-for-thought. onebark made some excellent points. The most important, IMHO, is that the magic shouldn't happen at the expense of the message. The marriage between the magic and message should be carefully crafted to achieve the desired result. It seems that your thinking is on the right track. I think you'll do very well. Good luck... and keep us posted. Dave

MagikDavid, Thanks for your input. My audences are high school to corporate so there is definitely a different movement. I wasn't discounting what onebark said, he's absolutely right that magic shouldn't overshadow the message. Although I am fairly new to magic, I have been around the block on the platform a time or two like yourself. Personally if magic or any other medium doesn't suplament the message, it's best left out but this isn't the case. Wow 50 years, all my life and then sum. Kudos

Dennis,
Just wanted to say that I commend you for the work you are doing. The fact that you care enough to unfluence the lives of so many troubled souls, says a lot about your character. You do have a daunting task ahead. Hopefully, many here will be able to help you put together a cohesive routine. If I think of any helpful suggestions, I'll post them here or PM you. As a fellow magician, I'm pleased to have you in our Café community. Dave
