"Success in Circuit Lies: Diderot’s Communicational Practice" is a book by Rosalina de la Carrera. John Bannon has this as a tag on his website. Why the connection with the French enightenment movement? I dunno.
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

From Impossibilia, Bannon's first book.
"Tell the truth but tell it slant Success in circuit lies Too bright for our infirm delight The Truth's superb suprise. As lightning to the children eased with explanation kind The truth must dazzle gradually or every man be blind." - Emily Dickinson Not sure what it means, but it sounds cool. |

Here's my interpretation.
The poem means that people slant the truth, or gloss over it, for circumstances and/or for children. The last two lines say we must all learn the facts eventually, or we're 'blind', i.e. we're out of it. With regard to magic, the phrase 'success in circuit' lies refers to the deception being necessary for success. The word circuit in this context, means 'to go around' or an 'indirect route'. Deceptive methods in magic are the 'indirect route' that's hidden from our audiences.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Of course, you may already know that the metre used by Dickinson for much of her work is exactly that of "The Yellow Rose Of Texas."
Sure puts a more chipper note into such otherwise-dreary refrains as "...because I could not STOP for Death, he kindly stopped for ME; the carriage held but just ourselves... and imor-TAL-ity" Leland |

LOL. Thanks Leland! I never knew that.
I think Bill is on to something with his interpretation.
