Hello all,
I have been reading through my new purchase, The Card Magic of Nick Trost and have come across the effect "Lost and Found." For those that have the book and/or are familiar with the trick, what revealation do you use? The handling is all done by the spectator and its extremely fair, they shuffle cut and all is ligit. Yet, you are able to note their card from a glance through the deck. To just name their card seems pointless because it doesn't justify all the shuffling and losing of the card. The card certainly must be "found." Ive been trying to come up with some good ways to reveal the card since I just love the effect so much and its all done by the specatator. Only trouble is, you don't know the location in the deck, you just know the selections identity. Anyone with the book or that knows the trick will know what I mean. Hope to hear from some people about their ideas. Cheers, Ron |

I found a copy on ebay, there is a seller who has many copies and is selling them one at a time on ebay for about 89.99..yikes..but I had to get it. I don't know if this is against the Café rules, and Im not trying to advertise, but I am selling my copy on Ebay right now for a decent price. I know, it seems soon to sell but I'm not a collector. I spent about 12 hours reading through the entire thing and have found the material I find usable for my style.

Wow! I'm afraid, as interested as I am in the book, I will not be offering to buy it from you. What did the book sell for when it was new? Is it out of print now? I have not been able to find a new copy of it.

If you use One-way Deck or Edge Marked Deck, you can spread the cards face down and pick out the selection. Looking face up cards and picking out selection is not so strong. You can pick out selection behind your back if you use a proper deck.

The book sold for $40 or so when it was on the market. It is out of print and that is why you can't find a copy from any dealers anymore. Auctions are probably your only chance at this point, and like I said, sellers are fuller aware of its value and will not hesitate to take advantage of that

Hushai: Try Magic Methods Online (Jerry Mentzer's site). I got mine from there last year for $40.
Ron Slater: I don't understand -- you're willing to sell it after only 12 hours of reading? Did you memorize it? |

JoeHohman,
Memorize, not at all. I am simply not a book collector. I read through every effect and took notes on those I enjoyed and WILL USE. Everyone has a particular style and I found several great gems throughout the book. But I simply don't need the book anymore and would like to pass it along to the next. Ron |

Two weeks ago I ordererd a brand new copy from Denny and Lee for $45.00.
They were getting low though, and may be out by now. |

Out of my magic library of 900+ books, this is my absolute favorite card book.
Ron, you do not have to be a collector to keep a good book...If anyone has the opportunity to buy this book, get it... Rennie

I agree completely with Rennie, "The Card Magic of Nick Trost" has assumed the mantle in my library as the single most important volume I own. The three volumes of AOA has held this title to date, but the Trost book has taken that place.
I've not read through any other book that makes me stop so often to think to myself "that's powerful card magic". Perhaps it's just how it suits my vision of what card magic should look like, but "The Card Magic of Nick Trost" is better than anything else I've read (or seen on DVD) that relates to straight card magic. The only caveat I'd put out there is that even though the book is well known for not being heavy on sleights, I'd want to have an excellent false shuffle before I commited to learning everything in this book. The requirement to set up some decks ahead of time (although many set ups can be done in front of the spec) really means that a transparent false shuffle will truly make most of the effects in this book unexplainable and magical. |

Thanks for the suggestions for where to buy the book, friends. Jerry Mentzer is out of the books, and they're $50.00 now at Denny and Lee's, with a warning on that site that they have only a few left.

Hushai, you might also try L&L Publishing.
Rennie, my current fave from there is the first trick in the "Tricks With Two Decks" chapter. It is based (sort of) on Scarne's three-card Do As I Do in Stars of Magic -- do you know the one I mean? I have been using that one as my opener for a few months now. Silverking raises a great point -- the book is NOT sleight-free. In fact, Trost has a great appendix at the end that teaches all the sleights he uses. (It might be more accurate to say that the book is "sleight light.") |

As Joe points out, there's a section at the back of the book which rivals Jerry Mentzer's "Counts, Cuts, Moves & Sublety" book for sleights included and quality of descriptions.
Although Jerry's book is inexpensive, and you can't go wrong owning both, you certainly don't need any other text to execute the variety of relatively simple sleights the Nick Trost book actually does require. Don't bother with L&L though, the book is well out of print and only available as old stock from dealers who have had it on their shelves for a period of time. |

Everything Rennie says about this book is true - This book of Nick's contains more easy to do (and brilliant!) magic than in any other book I own...

I'm with Rennie on his call that Trost is a GENIUS!
I think a lot of card workers know about this book, but may not really understand just how good it is unless they've got it. This book is SO GOOD that it's hard to put into words what it's like to read effect after effect that leaves you with your jaw hanging open. As I stated above (last year now), this book isn't completely sleight free, but those sleights that are required are completely within the abilities of the beginning card worker. If you're more advanced, then the stuff in this book will come completely naturally to you. The Trost book is definitely NOT a knuckle buster. A dedicated student with under a month of practice could use pretty much ANY effect in this book to devastate far more experienced magi.....something that not a lot of books can offer to the beginner. Still my favorite book, and one that will never leave my library (at least while I'm alive). Nick Trost unfortunately doesn't crave the limelight any longer. As a result of that there's very little chance of a reprint. If you DO find this book here on the Café or on Ebay, buy it......you'll never regret it! |

Since we have re-opened this old thread, here is a funny anecdote....
When this book was recommended to me, I thought I would try to buy it directly from Mr. Trost himself, as a way of trying to "best reward the creator," if you know what I mean. I had obtained his phone number from Bill Miesel, who is one of Trost's best friends. When I called Mr. Trost, his wife answered. I explained that I wanted to buy "The Card Magic of Nick Trost" directly from him. She told me to hold on a minute, she set down the phone, and I could hear her talking in the background: "There is a magician here who wants to buy your book." Then in the background I faintly heard a man's voice, saying, "Aw, tell him to go to hell." Uh-oh. I knew that Mr. Miesel was a curmudgeon, but I wasn't expecting this reaction! I shivered and thought about hanging up right there, not even waiting for his wife to get back on the phone. But when his wife came back on the phone, she said, "He says you should go to L&L." I had heard "L&L" as "hell!" What a relief! |
