I saw James Celien do this. How?? I have tried everything I can think of. I know it must be a simple solution. Does he use metal or plastic??
Thanks Joe |

Make a switch. After the cane appears, place it next to the dancing cane, take off the gloves to flowers or another quick trick pick up the dancing Fantasio cane, do a quick 20-30 second dance routine than vanish it.
According to the Fitzkee's "Trick Brain", there are 48 wasy to vanish an object. A steel cane can appears, a strong magnet well placed can hold it from the view of the audience. An appropriate misdirection, place cane on magnet. Just my thoughts on this one. Never done it

Thanks for the thoughts but I KNOW he doesn't switch canes. Also there is no twisting motion of the hands. He is collapsing an appearing cane but very fast.

I have just bought the fantasio appearing cane. If you say it can be done I will figure it out. the problem with the plastic cane is that it might be a little harder to repack than the metal one, but I dont know. it will be hard to figure out without seeing him do it.

Have you thought about vice-versa? Walk out with a vanishing cane. Later appear the cane.

Tha metal appearing canes require a twisting motion or they bind. Now it might be possible with Fanasio canes.

I know what you're talking about. I recently saw Dale Salwak do this in his act also and I was like... whoa.. how did he do that so quickly?

It is not possible to do it with every single cane. I found one of them in Canada. Since James Celien is Canadian I guess that he uses the same cane. I have tried to do it with German canes and it didn`t work. If you oil your cane very well outside and inside and then polish it with a cloth it might help you with your cane. You will have to twist it once anyway like Dale Salwak and James Celien do.

Ahh,
It was a very simple solution! I must try this, it sounds spectacular. I am currently working on a cane to 2 lit torches. Take care.
Try try and try again.

hmm... this is a tough one, i would think you would have to do a switch, but if i saw the performance myself it might be alittle easier to imangine a way to do it secretly.

I have seen Dale do this too. Years ago, I took private lessons from Dale and he showed this to me. It is a metal appearing cane that he uses. The silk is just attached like normal. When he does the vanish, he simply squashes the cane with both hands on the ends...but that is the big challenge. He used a Walsh that was loose. I used to have a Walsh cane, and it worked very well, but I had to work with it a lot to get it that way.

Well I have a few questions.
1) Does oiling the cane allow it collapse quicker? 2) what is a walsh cane ? 3) any clip on James Celien or others perfroming with canes? Any input is appreciated and keep this post rolling. Thanks Liyao |

I've cut around six inches from the top of an extended cane and replaced the white cap.
The intention at the time wasn't to help me vanish it, but as a result it has become possible. You may want to try this.

Ron,
I use a Walsh cane but I have had it coiled and "retired" for the last 10 years. It was well oiled and no rust formed but I'm having trouble getting it to fully extend (i.e. last 2"). Do you have any recommendations on getting it to "return to normal"? I've oiled it, "Unrolled" it to release any binding but it still is not quite right. Someone recently told me that I should have stored the cane in the open position. I wish I had known that ten years ago. As you know, the Walsh cane is one "strong" sucker and can be very dangerous if not handled properly. I wish you could see the little "half-moons" in my ceiling in my basement practice room. Unfortunately, I finally learned to handle the cane before I was able to complete the "half-moon" designer treatment on the entire ceiling (grin). And yes, with proper practice, I think the closing could be learned. It involves a knack of twisting the cane as you collapse it. I have never practiced the idea since I would always close my cane after the performance (outside of spectators' view) and I just used a series of small repeated twisting motions. However, I think a single bigger twisting motion could be incorportated into the collapsing. The next trick would be to get that darn little wire "stop" properly into place in the same fluid motion of twisting and collapsing. I guess that's how the effect would be done using the same cane and not switching the cane out for a disapperaing cane. Regards, Turk

How would this look.....
You come out on stage with a cane and do a little of your act with the cane in plain view, then the cane vanishes leaving you with a silk. Anytime you want you make the cane reappear. So you'd need that Cane to Silk, and an appearing cane. Sound good? Sorry if it doesn't. I'm new to this manipulation stuff. Chris |

In your February 14th post, you said: Ahh, It was a very simple solution! I must try this, it sounds spectacular. ******************************************** I would respectfully suggest that you discovered an important principle of magic. "A simple solution". Sometimes we magicians get too hung up concocting an elaborate knucklebusting sleight of hand routine which, even if it "fools" the audience, doesn't enchant them or excite them. They see a flurry of moves (often illogical moves) and intuitively/subconsciously think: "I don't know WHAT he did, but I know he did something"!! Reminds me of the true story about NASA. NASA needed to build a pen that would work in zero gravity, and write on any surface and under all temperature extremes that would be found in space. They spent millions and millions of dollars researching, testing, modifying, re-testing, etc. Testing was done on the ground and in many trips into outer-space. Finally, after many years of research and testing, they perfected just such a pen as they were looking for and that accomplished all they needed it to do. In the meantime, the Russians used a pencil.
