What do you suggest as an opening effect?
Why did you pick that effect. Do you use music and/or sound effects.

The obvious choice would be an appearance of yourself or an assistant using an effect such as Shadow Box. However, Kevin James' Bowl-a-Rama is a strong opener. A quick change can also be a good opener. I remember seeing a show when I was about 5 or 6, and the magician came onstage dressed as an old Merlin. It was a full cloak, mask etc. He pulled up the cloth and when it dropped a second later he'd changed into himself. I have always remembered that effect. A good opener IMO. There's plenty out there and so many variations on the well-used Shadow Box. Flash Appearance is pretty good.
Pick something that will be remembered. Mark

Richard Griffin used to do this, from memory, although it might be a "commercial" item. |

If memory serves I think it was at Camelot Theme Park, near Preston. Only a small theatre that seated about 50. I went back and watched the same show about 3 times that day. Ah, the memories! I don't think it was Stuart and Jane Loughland (Saffire) though, maybe the ones before them. Does this ring any bells? Mark

Afraid not, Mark - I saw this routine at a caravan park in Dorset, as part of Richard's weekly touring cycle, I guess... I'm sure I've seen Saffire, but I wouldn't remember whether it was them or not, sadly - I was lucky to see a lot of magicians in my childhood (sadly far fewer now...), and a lot of acts have merged together over time, I expect!

Very true Neil.
Saffire have been touring with the Chuckle Brothers for quite some time, all over the country. This year they're doing the magic and UV puppets for Joe Pasquale's Rentaghost, the musical. They aint done too bad for 'emselves! Sadly acts like these are few and far between these days. My illusions are on the road only a couple times a month now, but the comedy cabaret show seems very popular and my assistants work on the comedy show with me. Back to subject... I'm sure that somewhere in a quick change book you'll find a costume for the Old Merlin effect, or something that can be adapted. Can anybody confirm this and any good sources for quick change costumes or patterns? I quite fancy doing something like this as an opener now I come to think of it. Mark

I guess it would depend on how you want to do it (visual change v. covered change). If you take Merlin as essentially being a pointed hat, a beard and a long cape, potentially with some inverted U-shaped sleeves, then there's no reason why this can't all be one piece, sewn together, which is simply disgarded back over the head, into a heap on the ground, leaving you in the clothes below?

I have to admit, I'm still a huge Chuckle Brothers fan, even though I'm probably well outside their target audience range, and, although I don't remember much about Rentaghost (a bit young for that), I do have a couple of the books around here somewhere... (And now I can't get the theme tune out of my head- I obviously still remember that!) Quote:

Yes. I'm a Chuckle Brothers junky! ***, I can't believe I just admitted that! I love the slapstick comedy. Hoping to go watch Rentaghost, big fan of Joe Pasquale.
Will have a word with the costume department for the pantos I run and see if they can come up with anything for the old man costume change. Will let you know what happens. Mark

Here's some (IMO) good openers... Shadow Box / Tent Victory Cartons Fire Cage Flash Appearance Costume Change (As mentioned above) Bowl-a-Rama The Present Dolls House There's plenty more but it depends on certain factors such as your individual style, the size of your cast, the staging etc etc. If you have dancers a good dance which ends in your appearance I think is a good opener. Thanks again to all
here may be a clearer question. I do what I call a "stand-up" act. When I'm booked to work out of town I have to fly. So I can't pull a truck full of props. But even if a guy was working in town he could be in the same boat. I'm thinkingnabout an opening effect that grabs attention, but can fit in the back of a car on in a suitcase. I love the bowl-a-rama ideal and a shadow box is worth looking into but the Flash Appearance Costume Change Dolls House these are just to big for now thnks again

The Bowl-A-Rama may create a lot of weight compared to something equally as impressive, and just as small. If weight's not really a problem, there's an anvil appearance out there somewhere. I couldn't find a link to it though. The Executive Production Briefcase is a neat idea and lightweight. With the briefcase you can produce a couple of footballs or basketballs etc, and you can transport these flat and blow them up before the show to save on space. Plus its a GREAT deal cheaper.

For my private shows for an opening act I use my dove because first of all you don't want to keep a live animal waiting in a prop or whatever for a long time and it grabs the audience's attention to watch the show.
