I am looking for any information about Spirit Cabinets. In particular, Any information that talks about the Willard Cabinet (Glenn and Francis. I want to build but but I can't really find and books, video, lecture notes, or anything about the subject. If you know of a source please share it because it would be very helpful right now. Thanks.

I just did a search on "Spirit Cabinet" and found quite a good number of posts on the subject.

I believe that, in most cases, there is nothing special about the cabinet. What you need first is a good rope tie that you can get out of and right back into. The rest is a matter of what effects you want to do and what props you have available.

The Fogel rope tie is my favourite.

Check out Falkenstein & Willard Volume 2 on video - it has the Gypsy Mystery Rope Escape. In my opinion, this rope tie would be perfect for a spirit cabinet effect.

Check out the John Calvert Video "Magic Touch". It gives his Spirit Cabinet routine - which uses a rope tie very similar to Fogel's.
The Calvert Video is interesting from the point of the presentation - he's been doing it for about 50 years! Also, his folding cabinet is one of the easiest to carry. The video & cabinet (with music, presentation etc) are available exclusively from Hocus Pocus This is an addendum to my last post. If you go to http://www.hocus-pokus.com & search for "Calvert" you will find the Spirit Cabinet with a movie of the presentation which you can download |

I believe there is also a version of this in Tarbell!
Good place to start the research for this effect! Jess |

Hi,
Glenn and Francis probably uses Anna Eva Fay's method. She was one of the first great Mindreaders. Her haunted handkerchief inspired Blackstone Sr. to do the number. Yours faithfully, Dan kirsch |

Who else dose this effect? Can I use hoops?

The Spirit Cabinet is fully explained in an out of print book called, "Bob Blau's World Of Magic". It explains everything and the coat bit as well. The book was edited by our very own Bill Palmer right here on The Magic Café. Bob Blau was magician that did it all like so many in the 1920's through 1983. Not publication date is given, but from the way the book reads, it was published around 1983. Bill Palmer could pin point the year better, I am sure.
My advice would be if you are only interested in learning the secrets of this effect, move on as you may be disappointed, but if you really want to perform this and have a staff of assistants, then it would be a show stopper as it has in the past. This is not Willard The Wizard material, as in those days their were a large number of traveling tent shows and all or almost all did a version of this effect. As with any piece, little changes were made by the author, but to the audience the routine looks the same. |

Thanks. Bill
I knew Frances Willard and Glenn Falkenstein. The method they used for the Spirit Cabinet is the Willard Method, which was not the same as the Anna Eva Fay method, as far as I know. The underlying method of the Bob Blau cabinet was similar. However, the main things that BOTH of these methods require are Practice, Timing, Practice, Guts, Practice and Misdirection. And it also requires a lot of Practice. If you don't have a permanent partner, forget about doing the Spirit Cabinet. Bob Blau's spirit told me to post this. One other thing. The Bob Blau cabinet is revealed in Bob Blau's World of Magic (1985, roughly) and Spirits on the Stage (1994). Both books are out of print.

Spirit Cabinet routines are one of my favorite. I'm really lucky that as a kid I saw Copperfield perform his Barclay House illusion live at the Orpheum in Memphis.
I have some neat ideas for a routine, but as Bill says above it takes Practice and Guts. One day I hope to present one though... even if it is a simplified version. |
