Not haveing faith or a plasce to put it. Without faith there is no hope.
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.

For several years, my Grandfather took me to a yearly week long meeting and party with Benedictine Monks and Fryers who conducted lectures. We did this for years. One of the most memorable moments was between lectures when I witnessed a conversation between a Benedictine and a Fryer. One asked the other if he could ever equate "prayer" with "despair". He punched him in the face! It doesn't matter who did the asking nor the punching now. I only tell you what I saw. Ever come across this little ditty by Emily Dickinson? Some call it a poem some would call it a ditty. Depends on how dispariging your soul may be. Despair's advantage is achieved Despair's advantage is achieved By suffering -- Despair -- To be assisted of Reverse One must Reverse have bore -- The Worthiness of Suffering like The Worthiness of Death Is ascertained by tasting -- As can no other Mouth Of Savors -- make us conscious -- As did ourselves partake -- Affliction feels impalpable Until Ourselves are struck -- She's a b****! Despair that is, as Emily is just, well, no comment. |

I mentioned separation from God in the afterlife (for those whom it applies) as the worst but for those who are focused on today and while living I quote Mother Teresa:
"The most terrible poverty is loneliness and the feeling of being unloved" - Mother Teresa. Perhaps some have known that flavor of despair? Notice neither bread, water, nor riches or lack of is in her equation. In here eyes it was as she said "loneliness and the feeling of being unloved".... Of course, magician's know nothing about being unloved.... |

Josh is right: "Thing" need not refer to a tangible object (you may remember -- if you are old enough -- that English grammar calls those parts of speech nouns which are 'persons, places, objects, thoughts, or ideas.' Love, justice, evil, imagination, aesthetic...these are no less 'things' because they are non-corporeal. But hey, I'm just some stranger blathering online; a definitive answer may be found in any good English dictionary. Jerrine is also partly right, in that the question (while perhaps intentionally open-ended) was also ambiguous -- thus the wide array of responses, ranging from blackened toast bits on margarine ends to more horrific things. FWIW, the worst thing I can think of is materialism, the notion that everything is nothing more than a function of matter and energy. In this, it seems to me, all other bad things are rooted. I took a friend fishing and he brought two friends with him. I caught what I was looking for and they appeared to have a grand time. I later found out one of them commented that he was surprised that I owned a boat but had no cell phone. WHAT!? I have a small boat - NOT A 1 MILLION DOLLAR YACHT! He went on to say that anyone who could afford a boat could surely afford a phone. I say again, WHAT!? I eat a great deal of seafood which I prefer to catch myself. The overpriced restaurant seafood dishes I leave to others. I cook it myself to my satisfaction and taste. Best of all the catch comes with a trip to the ocean where I prefer to be in the first place. In essence, the boat is one of SEVERAL TOOLS THAT FEEDS ME. If I did have a cell phone and heard it ring while I was on the boat it would soon be sleeping with the fishies and we don't want to pollute such a resource do we.... Maybe some day I'll round up a few Café members and take them out on a fishing trip. Yeah, it'll be like a scene out of "One Flew Over The Cookoo's Nest" (1975) for sure. I doubt he'd get on my boat but can you see Steve Brooks trying to hook a shrimp for bait and Jonathan Townsend getting his hook caught on people's clothes as he tries to cast his line into the ocean. And let's not forget "Josh The Superfluous" trying to put the displaced eye of a fish back in it's head. LOL! Oh I'm so bad. Oh the list goes on but what a memorable trip that would be. A trip is what it would be. Yelling from across the boat "Did ya put the eye back in it's head Josh!"... |

Randy, I'd love to come with you. But, based on your cell phone comment is it safe to assume your boat doesn't have high-speed internet? BTW I got the eye back in, but what's that thing bubbling out of it's mouth?
Leland, your diplomatic comment got in the way of a perfectly good flame war. If I don't get these threads deleted on a regular basis, my wife will know how often I actually post.

The worst thing is Ignorance.
Ignorance leads to hate as we fear that which we don't understand. Ignorance is responsable for poverty and indifference. Ignorance gives us intolerence. Ignorance promotes beliefs in superstition. Most of the problems in this world are directly attributed to Ignorance.

Well, there's alot. And, man has created it all. And keeps all the evil living strong. The world is wonderful, yet a hell in its own. It's sad really. |
