I have heard all sorts of stuff about how difficult it is and after reading bout the history of it on the royal road to card magic I was no longer interested in learning it. so I just read through the chapter but I didn't practice it and moved on.
I hadn't seen any 1 do the pass at this time so I didn't know how it looks when it done. but two days ago I saw a clip of a guy doing the pass, and I really wanted to learn it, so I took my book read it, looked at the guy do it, he did it a bit differently but same principle. so I started practicing the whole day and now I can do it really well 95 percent of the time. I was wondering why everyone is so negative bout the sleight, saying that it's really difficult and in doing so making the amteur miss out on this sleight that is really useful in performing card magic

I'll assume you're posting about the Classic Pass.
Not everyone is negative. In fact many who don't do the CP will do a variation that exchanges top and bottom portions. A great many card tricks don't require this exchange. I think that lots of folks falsely feel that the CP is meant to be done when the hands are being stared at and that's where idea of it's difficulty comes from. For others hand size, finger length, concealing finger movement are problematic. |

For any type of pass, the specs aren't supposed to know anything happend at all, no movement, no sound, no nothing. For most magicians, the kind of practice it takes to master the CP to that extent is too tedious, so they blow it off and learn an easier way to control a card to the top. But for the select few that can pull off a CP and fool even the most observant of spectators, the reaction is well worth it.
An amatuer practices untill he gets it right, a professinal practices untill he can't get it wrong.
Don't wait for oppurtunity to knock, throw open the door, grab it by the throat and drag it inside kicking and screaming. Magically yours |

The pass I learned is a bit diff from the CP, you don't bring the bottom half from the left but instead you bring it from the right under the cover of ur palm, it's fairly easy, here's a clip of sum guy doing it, bout the same as how I do it ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPG9AYSRVfw

Ahhh- the pass! All sorts of variations. Might I highly- HIGHLY recommend the following book. Aaron Fishers, 'Paper Engine.' Great magic there and great sleights in this little book that will greatly increase your card magic repertoire, AND give you the chops you need when dealing with card magic in general. By far the smallest book in my library, but the most refered to!

The Pass in any form is very useful. At the same time it is very rarely the only way to accomplish most uses. It does take a lot practice and misdirection to do it well. But, I have never heard of anyone regretting the time put in to learn it.
The side steal is a lot easier, and can accomplish 90% of the effects. But, I like to do the other 10%. rmoraleta, when I demo my pass to other magicians, I ask them if they've ever seen the so-and-so effect. As I ask them, I look in their eyes and do the pass. I then say "I don't know what that effect is, but that was my pass".

What Josh and rmoraleta suggest and even some hand gesture works best for me.
Get them focusing attention elsewhere and do it. |

I have to agree with Jaz...just a simple gesture or asking the spectator a question, such as "Do you remember your card" is the perfect moment to do some dirty work! Good luck!

The thing about the pass is, once you think to yourself, "Sweet I got it!" which doesn't have to take a whole lotta time, you realize that it's far from performance-ready, and getting to THAT level is what will take you a long time. Just keep doing it, again and again, until it feels natural... then practice it some more. I agree that the pay-off is worth it.

Yup I just realised that by over using the pass on the same crowd and 1 guy was looking at my hands the 1 time it didn't come off perfect. it was my test auudience so it wasn't too bad. Taught me not to be too anxious to show new tricks.

The Kaufmann "The Pass" video or DVD will cover the nuance of many versions of the pass. Nothing replaces good practice technique. If you get it....then your will know from the beginning what the issues are and get the tips on position, timing and cover.
Best of Luck. |

I've never performed a classic pass for "real people." I very often use the turnover pass, spread pass, and my favorite the midnight shift. I've spent some time working on Alain Nu's distortion pass. I had developed the same idea while trying to learn a classic. I play with it once in a while, but have never used it under fire.

Cheety,
I've found that one of the reasons why the pass is typically overlooked or disregarded by beginning magicians is mainly due to the misdirection required in order to perform it. As beginners, we focuse so much on attempting to execute a sleight perfectly whilst our nerves are being thoroughly tested by spectators burning our hands. As such, learning to effectively misdirect a spectator comes through with experience and in doing so, we can begin to re-evaluate the classic pass. However, it must be said that a certain Akira Fujii (and other japanese magicians) seem to be pioneering the extreme use of the classic pass without misdirection (speed and technique). There are some products, such as the PSP (Plates to Speed up the Pass) to help promote these attributes even further. |

It`s like learning the art of pickpocketing. In order to get better and to know how people observe and how well they observe- you need and are going to get caught. I use the pass all the time in my card work. When I first started it- people knew. I know they knew. I could tell. Now though; I`m proficient enough with it. Just the other day I was visiting a local magic shop in Japan here and the magicians were actually working on the pass when I came in. We worked about two hours on it; me helping them and all. It really is something that needs a great attention to detail. I always tell people that, I got the pass down to a science. And it is; all timing and misdirection. A tool of magic that once executed correctly will open even more doors for your repertoire...
