I don't have the Book/dvd, but I do perform all four tricks using normal coins.
There is no reason to think that Mr. thompson's version would be any different. |

I don't know Johnny Thompson's methods but each of the effects mentioned can be done with regular coins, with gaffs or with an extra coin.
If you don't have Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" I strongly suggest you buy it. There are several variations of all the effects you mention except perhaps HAN PING CHIEN COIN TRICK. Best wishes. |

Hello, Jaz
Yes, I do have Bobo's. I was wondering specifically about Johnny Thompson's handlings because as you say they can be done with or without gaffs. Myself and a friend (she is a card magician and I am more into balls and coins) are putting on a dinner party show for our friends and it is themed to classics of magic. I have the Thompson DVD on the way and I was thinking to pick up Bobo's or wait for the DVDs. I will probably do both anyway and compare. Thanks for your answers.

Sounds interesting Eva. Whatever the outcome may be, do not let yourself be drawn in questions if the "classics" should or should not be gaffed or gaffless. I would advice to go for the best method for the best effect. If that method needs a gaff, go for it.
Wouldn't a "classic" mean a classic effect? I do not have the videos of Johnny Thompson but I think all the routines you mention are done without special coins. Learning to do, for instance coins across with and without gaffs is a task most interesting for any magican! Have fun and astonish your friends.

One of the routines on the Johnny Thompson videos requires a c/s coin, in addition to regular coins. It starts with a Spellbound sequence, segues to Presto-Changeo (from Bobo), and concludes with copper-silver transposition in the spectator's hand.
On the tape, interviewer Michael Ammar opines that this is a perfect piece of coin magic for walkaround. Cheers, Jerry |
