Andrew, thanks! I've always wondered where to find these. The portable AC unit isn't working as I expected (DUH!) so it's nice to have another avenue to explore!!!

What a great idea to use a portable air-conditioner for outdoor shows! I have been on those big outdoor sound stages that have cooling units. They are great.
I book only indoor shows in the summer because of the heat. As performers, we are moving around fast and maintaining a high energy. This keeps us hot and sweaty, more than our audiences. Have you ever had a client set you up on a stage in the brilliant 3pm sun in heat and humidity and have you perform and bake for an hour? Geez, what are they thinking? My record high was performing two back-to-back outdoor shows in Memphis in 108 degrees and 89% humidity. Please let us know how well your air conditioner works for you in the long run. The cool packs idea is excellent! I use a sort of cool thingy around my neck in severe heat. It is a hydrated spongy bandana and it works pretty well.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

I think my toughest outdoor performance was 12 hours of outdoor strolling magic with an average temperature of about 100 degrees. YIKES!

The 16,000 BTU unit works reasonably well. I have a three sided EZ-Up tent that I place behind my stage as a place to escape to between shows. By directing the airflow toward my chair I was able to drop the temp around me to a comfortable level. Now, that said, I feel that carrying the unit with my other equipment was a burden...the thing is heavier than I expected. And I had to remain directly within the airstream to get any reasonable benefit from the unit. There wasn't enough force to feed any noticeable temp change to the opening of the tent or stage...even with extra fans.
I believe I'll return the unit and try the cool vest. I created a homemade cool vest that did wonders but didn't retain the coolness for any length of time on hot days. Let's see what a pro model will do. The AC unit was certainly worth a try and I very much appreciate everyone's positive comments and advice. Without experiementation where would we be? Skip

Howdy! 114 here over the weekend, we sold every fan, swamp cooler (which is what the portables are), and AC w/in 100 mile radius! Never found a 16,000 BTU unit, even checked the Home Depot special order fields. Either way I did find a portable evap unit that is a spot chiller. It is meant to aim the cool air at a specific place and because it doesn't vent like a portable unit and the fellow above was right, it shouldn't be used in a room in a house, it is designed for use in a warehouse or outside. Those units may go up to 16,000 btus. Good times!
