I am going to be adding the mental trick 1089 to my stage act. My question is so far I have 4 ideas on how to make the reveal.
1). write it before the trick as my prediction. 2.) record it before the show on a tape and play the tape during the show 3.) write my self a letter and mail it to my self a couple of days before the show and open the letter on stage after the effect. 4.) have 3 envelopes and have the person pick an envelope before the trick starts. and I take a paper shredder and shred the other envelopes and let that be the reveal. any ideas would be great or if someone else has another way to reveal.

If you are going to shred the envelopes than you can have a lot more than three.
If you have just three, magicians force, and reveal the other two as different predictions instead of shredding. You could still shred them, but what's the point? Dave

1089?
Is that the basic mathematical trick, with the number reversal and so forth? Or is that an altogether new effect? The spectators may pass this as a mere mathematical trick. Is that what you want? P.S - I am from Franklin, by the by.

Yes it is a the mathematica trick but everytime I've done it, it gets a great reaction. I think it is all in the presentation.

I also got good reactions from this effect.
I don't perform it anymore, because I think there are stronger ways to reach the same type of effect (i.e. add a no and matrix). The 1089 principle is great for impromptu situations, especially if you give a meaning to the numbers. You can tell your spectator that you are going to advise her or him how much money they will spend for their next holiday. This will be determined by fate and calculated from the date of departure. Ask when he or she want to leave and make a three digit number from it (i.e. june 21th becomes 621. Do the necessary calculations with them, and reveal your prediction. I woud youse an envelope with a big written prediction (easy but powerful). The bigger de relevation, the better the reaction. You can also integrate this method in a confabulation-like triple prediction where two other items are forced (i.e. destination en vehicle). I use this type of effect as a closer from my mental show. It gets great reactions. |

I had lots of fun with this trick back in October of 1989. I'd reveal my prediction with a calendar page of the current month. I look to my audience and say, "It doesn't make any sense. It's just a calendar page for this month, 10/89. Wait - is that it?!? 1089?"

Very nice, but I am still stuck on which way to make the reveal. So any advice would be great

Hey, if you write yourself a letter, how about using a fake "October, 1989" postmark?
I think just because we all know the mathematical principal, doesn't mean our audience does. See ya! Joe L.

Somehow, I find it hard that people will buy this. This has been used so many times, and has been published in so many books, from comics to magic books. If I want to create an impression that you really read minds, I would not use this.
Well, just my thoughts.
