I know we have done a few rounds on this before but I wondering how many people carry music to shows that only deal with 20 - 30 people? I have found it is good way to set a mood and with smaller systems available (mini-disc) it is easier to carry it from show to show. If a show is timed out it would be easy with todays computers to edit in sound effects and nararation.
Any comments and/or suggestions? What types of music do you use? In your opinion how does it effect the audience? Magickman

Magickman, I've used music during several effects, and to set the mood before a show. Canteloube's 'Songs of the Auvergne:Bailero' has appeared in some of my brighter, more romantic moments. Saint Saen's 'Aquarium' has given a delicate shimmer to my light effect. Snatches of Thomas Tallis, and other choral music have featured too.
My other creative interest, outside of magic, is song writing and music production, and in the past, I made tapes of weird ambient stuff on 4 track for background moods. Lots of long reverbs, backward gothic chanting, and so on. Textural, rather than outwardly creepy. When I was at University, I devised an effect which was ALL sound. I called it the 'Terror chamber', and it appeared at a Halloween party, where I did a seance, and other bits and pieces. Grand as it sounds, all it was was the cupboard under the stairs. We made it comfortable with cushions, and got people to lie down between two speakers. Then we played the tape, which was one of my mood pieces, over which I'd mixed various horror sound FX. Cats screeching, people sobbing, and ending with a demonic cackling. I used hard panning, and suddenly high levels to add to the scariness. Now this sounds cheesy, but alone in the complete dark, locked in there (no door handle on the inside) people got really scared. We let the party gain momentum before starting it, so that people would be a bit wasted, but not too much. And we had people signing disclaimers, in case 'things went wrong', and planted suggestions that a hand might grab them and so on. People still remind me about it now, too many years later. As for using the computer to mix your music and FX, anybody could do this. Chuck in some signal processing (lots of very good free plugins out there), and you could develop something really special. Regards, Caleb Strange.

I stay away from the "Bought-It-At-Kmart-At-Halloween-Time" CDs. If you do use music, use only CDs done by pros. For Bizzare performers, I HIGHLY recommend Black Aria by Glenn Danzig.
