Okay, I surrender (sorta) - VHS is out, a DVR is the wave of the future.
But it rankles me to be expected to pay Tivo's monthly fee (for nothing, as far as I'm concerned). Is there ANY DVR that doesn't demand a monthly subscription fee? That you can use like you used to use your VCR? (Well, with severe limitations - gosh-darned rights-management ripoff) |

A lot of big cable companies offer free DVR with their digital cable, which is getting much cheaper.

There are many that you can use just like a VCR. I have one from Cyberhome that normally cost about $99. It is all you need if all you are looking to do is record TV programs.

If you have Time Warner cable, they have a great deal on DVR. We have digital cable at home and they charge us like $3.00 a month on our cable bill for this service. That's a heck of a lot cheaper than Tivo, and it's basically the same stinkin' thing.

If you buy a GREAT graphics card, it has DVR functions. And you can download the tv listings too. Have a look at the ATI cards and then google the web for downloadable tv listings.
:) ps, I own three tivos. including the model II with the DVD burn drive.

Or you can get rid of the prehistoric cable and go Dish...it's great and our DVR was FREE with the SBC/AT&T signup...no contract...record 2 events same time while you watch a 3rd. Picture and sound slaughters ANY digi cable.
Some folks like Direct TV BUT all I've seen Dish Picture is far superior. REALLY happy with it. Excellent service as well. Have fun.

I had dish for about three years. The last time it was knocked out by a shower, I went to cable. The picture is just as good and the service is flawless. Also, I get my broadband service through them.

It started to go as the rainstorm outside got worse and he said; "Yeah, it does that whenever it rains!" I have DirectTV, it does what I need it to do and I manage when storms knock out the signal for a short while. I don't like DVR. Some DVR company (probably Tivo) said the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction" was the most replayed moment in their library. I thought, wait a minute, they're monitoring what gets replayed? I have a DVD recorder and if something's on that I'm gonna want to watch again, I record it on DVD. (I'm trying to tranfer my VHS tapes to DVD, I'm having a problem running them on any other DVD player after the transfer. I'll figure it out!)

My dish has been through storms and rain aplenty...never had a blip in the signal.
Flawless always.

Well, we all have preferences. That's why they have horse races. I like DirectTV and the rare signal loss isn't significant to me.

Same here. I had Dish Network for about three years. Everytime there was a pop-up thunderstorm BLAMO!!! There's goes the picture. It is very fustrating when you are in the middle of a program (especially at the end when you are about to find out whodunnit). Haven't had any problems like that at all with cable. But, to each his own.
