Can anyone reccomend where I can find some good routines with Multiple Candles? I already have my canes and candles book by Fantasio. Any other sources for Multiple Candle tricks?

Thanks,

Fantasio Lecturing Live At The Magic Castle video is a good one. I wish I had it on dvd. There is a lot of good material on it.
Also, Michael Lair has his dvd CANDLES. I had the video years ago but lost it in a move. I picked it up from him at the SAM convention last week. Michael also has some very good stuff on candles.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response. I already have the Lair DVD.

Didn't know there was a Fantasio lecture at the Magic Castle. Wonder where I could get that? Any other advice would be apprecaited.

Thanks, Jim.

To my knowledge, there is not any video or book on using Multiple Candles. This is really routining you are asking for and that is worked out by the performer. Sounds like you have the materials, study and set aside some time each day to work with them. Just don't let them set in a drawer or box and and not handle them. The more you handle them the more you will become more confident with the the props.

Actully doing, will kick in your thinking. What if I try this! And so on!

The dvd from Michael Lair does use multiple candles in some effects.
Here is the link to the video at Hank Lee's:

There is also some lecture notes called Stage magic 102 Canes & Candles which has some material. It is by Bill Robinson. I still think the Fantasio & Lair material is better.
Hopefully this helps.

Jim

Thanks Jim,

Another question I have is, when Lance Burton performs his famous candle routine, does anyone know what he uses to lock the Vanishing Candle in place so he can hold it from the middle? He makes it look quite clean. I am currently trying to play around with the 'Challenger' gimmick specified in my canes and candles book by Fantasio and I'm having a little trouble with it. Any help on locking of Vanishing Candle would be appreciated as well.

Just use a rubber band in the bottom end of the vaishing cane when it's collapsed when you extend it. The band will keep the candle in position. Just remove the band to make it vanish.

Thanks Alex,

Man, I wasted an inch off of my candle trying to make the 'Challenger' gimmick.
I'll try the rubber band when I get home from work. Seems like it'll work just as well.

Thanks,

Answer: No, he has never let any of his techniques out to the magic community. Tony Clark once sold a vanishing candle that had this feature. You might email him and see if he will sell you his method. To my knowledge, it is not in any of the Fantasio books. He use to sell it with a candle, but maybe he will sell it without.

Being it looks like Lance Burton gets his flash paper from the bottom of the candle, it must have something to do with this when he removes it. It may be like the Cris Kenner ending to his 3 Fly routine and the vanish of the last coin, no one will ever know for sure.

David Garrard has a set of lecture notes on candles. He is a friend of Lance Burton and has permission to publish the material. He uses the same technique that Lance uses to hold a vanishing candle in the middle. I will not tip the technique since it is David and Lance's. It is very good stuff on candles and other magic effects. His website is http://www.davidgarrardmagic.com

Lance Burton Gets the flash paper from the top of the candle. It's between the coils and the top plastic part of the candle. Check the video carefully. You can see it quite clearly. What he takes from the bottom is the rubber band or something similar that holds the Vanishing Candle open, like I stated in my above post.

On Johnny Carson, he took the flash paper from the bottom of the candle and every performance I have seen him do it this way. He lights it at the top of the candle. I know what I have seen. Maybe he does both, I have not seen every one of his shows.

I did not see an offering of his lecture notes for sale on his site. Are they available and published?

I use the candles in REVERSE! Except the last one, all Fantasio Candles are "vanishing" with two of them taped in position.

See my video below. I'm no expert but I tend to use them in reverse anyway.

Clip...Shmip.... You can do it! Smile If you do figure out something new may I borrow it from you with eternal mention? Smile

The worse I've done to date is borrow, WITH MENTION, but never stole.

Yes, the act still awaits its character and definition and soon to come Smile I'm working on now. Let's do candles.

Well, light it!

Bill,

You'll have to email him or call him. I think I paid $10.00 for the lecuture notes. David is a very nice guy and very approachable. His notes are called "My First Lecture".

Thanks Sal, does anyone have any input on the videos? I mean the DVD's are only 15$, which is pretty cheap for a magic DVD. Is there a reason they're so cheap?

Any reviews on them? (or the tapes?)
Thanks,
