I wanted to pose a question, as I just returned from my first formal show. How do you, personally, go about obtaining feedback? I thought of passing out feedback questionnaires at the end of the performance, but did not go through with it. Other than the audience's reaction, or our perception of it, how do we go about gauging our level of performance?

Tony,
This is a valid question. I use a couple of methods. Before I tell you mine, however, consider one that I heard suggested on John Archer's video... hide out in the bathroom stalls and listen to what people are saying after the show. By the way, John Archer did credit this idea to someone else; I just don't remember who at the moment. What I've done is had my wife or other magicians sit in the audience and mingle with the crowd afterward to listen for feedback. It also depends on the venue. If you have a party planner, you could give feedback cards to the people who hired you (rather than the audience members). Often, the audience members will give feedback to the people who organized the event. |

Jeff,
Both ideas are very good. Thanks! One question: which video are you referring to? Thanks Again, Anthony |

I had a query of a similar nature not 10 minutes ago.
How do you (professionals) obtain the quotes from clients that you so proudly display on your websites? Tom |

Ask the client for a letter/testimonial about your performance
before the show. Do it while you take a booking. Let them know that provided they are delighted with your show and performance, they would be a great help to you in marketing your services. Most people want to help you. Especially if you did a good job. But you have to ask. Preferably before the show so they know what to expect. If you are new in this biz, you have to chase testimonials. And lots of them. It is critical. You can only use some of them. People buy a product and service when they see what you have done for other people similar to them. I have found it to be the single most important thing you can do to market yourself. Some people forget etc, but if you did a good job you will get plenty of letters. Also, while you are at it, take a camera. Ask to client if they wouldnt mind taking a few shots of you in performance. I have never had a problem with this. Cheers. Tom |
