Folks who are trying to make a pun usually say, "Pun intended".

The thing about puns that gets to me, is done by "News" reporters. Have you ever heard one say that something is going to the dogs, which wasn't immediately followed by images of dogs?
Try saying "no pun intended" after a statement that contains no pun. And watch the listener back track your sentence, or fake laugh as if they got it.

I love puns, I seldom turn down the opportunity to make one. If I say no pun intended, that means I was trying to be serious and the pun happened anyway.

I might just end all of my posts with that (no pun intended).
If combined with "unnecessary" quotation marks, it could really "be" confusing (no pun intended).
