I'm trying to do a ring and pencil effect, but my IT keeps coming out of the wax. I've trying really bunching it into the wax but to no use. Any suggestions?

What type of wax are you using? The harder wax will work better, of course. Also, are you using enough wax? If you worry too much about the wax being spotted, you may not have enough wax to hold the IT.

It's a pretty soft wax actually. The IT just slides right out when too much pressure is applied. I'll see if I can find some harder stuff.
Thank you! |

Get the hard wax. the wax should be hard enough that you need to scrape the wax out of the container with a coin. and even then it's not easy. If you can scrape a big blob out with your thumbnail then your wax is too soft.

One note about the hard wax -- it's a good idea to soften it before your show, otherwise it may not stick. Just massage it between your fingers for 10-20 seconds. It won't get as soft as the soft wax, but will definitely work better.

Hi Micromega,
I went through the same problems you were having until I realised that there was harder wax available. After switching over, there was hardly any issues as the thread was no longer slicing through the soft wax. Another bonus with using hard wax is that the entire pellet peels off easily whereas the soft wax may leave clumps and may give away the effect. -Stephen |

In which case, does soft wax have any good purpose?

Maybe take a look at Gary Kurtz's routine. It is either on Let Get Flourious or Creating Magic. Oh and poster putty works rather well for this type of idea. If you get the white kind you can do what Carney does in his coins through hand routine in Carneycopia.

I use bee wax and so far I don`t have any complaints. I just warm it up using my hands before the show and I`m ready to go

You might want to give this a try...
Wrap the end of the IT around a small broken piece of toothpick before wrapping the wax around it. A more elaborate method, if this doesn't give you the result you are looking for... Lay the IT down on a piece of greased wax paper. Then, place a drop of super glue on the end of the IT (the glue itself should be enough, or you can put a small piece of toothpich or the like in the blob of glue as well). Once it dries you should be able to peel the blob off of the greased wax paper and wrap a ball of wax around it. The first method has always worked for me, the second, more elaborate method, was suggested but I have never had the need to use it since the first method has worked so well. Best of luck! |

If performing with something that's a little bit heavy like a ring or coin try wrapping your IT around a small piece of off white cotton thread before putting it into the wax. The thread acts as a anchor and holds in place really well.
I don't perform illusions... it just looks like I do!
