Hey Folks,
Here's the latest review of Christian Cagigal's "The Pandora Experiment", from the SF Weekly: "For Christian Cagigal's newest magic show, the audience is not so much a subject of clinical study, but an object of affection. Cagigal stands on a living room rug counting audience members with his stage manager before stepping off, and moments later re-emerges transformed to guide us through "the experiment." Cagigal uses antique objects that are well-worn, simple and accessible; two music boxes with haunting chimes, small chests with the treasures of a child inside. A doll of porcelain and papier-mâché gazes soulfully throughout and feels as real as any of us. His performance takes the audience beyond just the willing suspension of disbelief and into another place in time where magic is not the work of an illusionist or performer but exists in creaky wooden boxes found in a grandparent's attic. The set and lighting underscore Cagigal's creation to create an ethereal beauty. His staging and sensitivity as he plays with his audience conveys a level of safety and trust so as to not feel duped, but included in the magic. What does The Pandora Experiment reveal? Above all else: imagination. " Christian Cagigal's "The Pandora Experiment" at The Exit Theater 156 Eddy St., San Francisco Fridays and Saturdays through June 30 Tickets: $12-$20 Call 415-673-3847 or go to http://www.theexit.org I foolishly waited until the last minute to reserve tickets, only to find the show had sold out! But I've got a reservation now and can't wait to see it!

A great shame Gerry McCambridge wasn't able to be there as I was very much looking forward to seeing him perform also. The socialising after the event is always such a highlight for me, as getting to chat one on one is always such a pleasure. Anton Zellman, Banachek, Joe Atmore, Jay Alexander, Loyd Auerbach, all a pleasure to talk to and a pleasure to be around. For those of you who are members of the Mentalist Sanctum, there is a review posted there. For those of you who are not and are interested, please feel free to pm me. I cannot copy and paste comments of others, but am happy to copy and paste my own post if you are interested. Tom Cutts said <<You can catch me at St. Supery winery tomorrow. Many Congratulations!! Best, *Magical Lady* |

Hey Folks,
I've been plugging "The Pandora Experiment" quite a bit here, but I just had to chime in again since I finally actually saw the show and was delighted with the experience. The show has been held over into July--you can get more info at http://www.sffringe.org (and check out the SF Weekly review two posts back on this very thread). OK, I'll shut up now about "The Pandora Experiment". But I really think you should go see it.

Hey Ronin,
I have seen the show "The Pandora Experiment" too and have to say that I had a great time. I like that it was a very intimate show and Christian had everyone invloved. Good to hear that it's here through July. If you haven't seen the show, you should!

Christian's show was great. The tricks themselves were strictly run of the mill, but the presentation and atmosphere made up for that.
One thing I noticed, however, was that the audience didn't always know when to applaud. To me, that means either that 1) the climax wasn't that great, or 2) the performer didn't make it clear that it was the climax. This seems common in performances I've seen. But if the audience doesn't know that it's been amazed, some rethinking of the act seems like a good idea. ///ark |

Hello all,
I am located in Grass Valley area. Had the magic bug for 4 or 5 years when a early teen. Have finally had some time to be bitten by the bug again. I’m interested in “must see” performances anywhere in NorCal. No “public” performances for me yet. In general I like magic that takes some work. I also seem to be gettin more and more attracted to close-up stuff. Rich, thanks for the heads-up on this thread. As a new guy at the Café I would have never found it. Regards to all

Mr.Ree, if you read some of the posts on this threads past pages you will see there are many must see performances of magic here in Northern Ca, most of which admitedly are in the Bay Area but I think you will find some worth the drive. Cal Magic Dinner theater in Martinez gets in top names all the time John Carney, Daryl, Caveney, Dana Daniels, just to name a few. and there are shows going on now in S.F. that are spectacular, you can get a lot of information about those shows thru Mis Directions magic shop web site and e mailing list.
welcome to the thread. Rich

Hi Mr Ree,
Welcome to the forum. I'd also say take a visit to the California Magic Dinner Theater some time. On July 27 & 28 they are having a special show that weekend featuring The Flying Calamari Brothers! There's a show I will highly recommend. |

I see that this posting has brought a lot of Northern California magic enthusiasts out into the open. I see some names here that go back to the halcion days of Ring 38 at Earthquake McGoons in San Francisco. We had some fun.
Meanwhile, I have met a lot of fine magicians and fun people in Ring 216 in San Jose. Come on down for one of our meetings or to the "Big Show" put on every couple of months at ring president Will Chandler's house. Check us out at http://www.ring216.org/ Jim Mullen

Benicia here. Been performing magic since about age 7, and badly too. At 56, I figure I don't need to pretend to be an adult anymore, so time to get back to the Important Things of Life, and what a joy to discover California Magic Theatre right around the corner. Rich, hope to get a chance to say hello this weekend at your performance there, had NO idea of the sizable community hereabouts--just never looked I guess--and it's happyIyam!
