Hi
Thanks for the PM. I am just beginning to learn magic, though I am struggling with an over abundance of choice right now. I'm embarassed to say that in an excess of enthusiasm, I bought too many tricks and books, nmaking it difficult to focus on a course of study. I am definitely open to getting together to attend events, at the Magic Dinner Theatre or elsewhere, as I don't personally know anyone else in magic. I haven't heard of the Oakland Magic Circle before - is it open to anyone, and if so, where do I find it?

Howdy Rich and everyone else,
I am here with my shoes and shirt off and sitting in my skivvies. (but I am wearing a red clown nose and wig) Northern California might not have the Magic Castle or the amount of performers and shows in Vegas but we do have an amazing scene of magic. Misdirection’s is without a doubt one of the best shops in the country. Joe knows his inventory, watches every DVD and really tries to sell what is best for each person who comes into the shop. The shop is stocked better or equal to any brick and mortar store around. His sponsored lectures are the best lectures in the business. The Magic Dinner Theatre is a really neat venue to see magic and Gerry is a great guy. He has been sponsoring lectures as well but I have yet to make one. We also have Frank Balcerak’s shop in Petaluma and the Mostly Magic Shop in Santa Rosa. We have countless IBM and SAM groups, the OMC and private magic groups. We have street performers, many different magic theater production shows that happen every year and amazing amount of good professional magicians. The libraries sponsor many kid show performers for free. (you can even get a chance to see Dan Chan perform... see above schedule) The Bay Area is pretty split up but magicians of all levels can find a lot here. My Best to Everyone, Jay Alexander |

I don't get up there nearly as often as I ought to anymore. I'm from Sacramento initially which is why you can see me in the audience for a lot of the early A-1 and L&L videos but moved to the greater SF area 10 years ago and currently reside just outside of San Mateo. Frank has a neat little shop upstairs in the same building as a martial arts studio. Adds a certain exotic flavor to the location. Frank is a great guy -- my wife and I visited on our way back from Bodega Bay earlier this year. He took the time to talk magic and exchange magical ideas, which was very fun and a rare treat for me. I recommend anyone to make the trip and visit Frank's shop.

I did a quick search for these two shops and didn't find a website for either one. I did find a Yellow Page type add on Yahoo Search that gives each phone number, address and nice driving map. They look like they're easy to find.

Hey Jay, good to see you here. I was trying to get a group of the fellows here together to go and check out the Off Market Theater, thought it would be fun to see a show with others here and also bring some business to the theater, what say you...

Hi Rich,
I will probably stop in to the Off Market this Saturday to do a set of new material. It all depends on getting out of an earlier show and to the Off Market in time. Another great magician to see in SF is Veronin in Teatro ZinZanni. He is an amazing study in taking your time, character and how material that fits the character is more important than how good the trick is. The show is filled with the best variety acts in the world. Jay Alexander |
