Hello all. I'm in Davis California. Good idea to get a N. Cal Group like this. So consider me checked in..
I am really looking for a mentor to help me with the business side of magic. I have been performing for 21 + years and I feel it is time I start doing it for money. I really need some help on marketing and promoting myself to restaurants, corporations and the likes. If anyone could give me some ideas, I would really appreciate them. Thanks Dot Talisman |

Welcome Dot, I think you will find what you are looking for here, for myself I would like to know more about you and the style of magic you perform. I will offer what I can in way of advise (remember it is free and worth every penny) you will find the business side of magic more difficult to squeese info out of magi, well because most don't know much about it either. when I got started I thought well I will just go to an SAM or IBM meeting or two and learn all I need... well I was young and stupid, others are less forth coming with marketing info because lets face it we are all in more or less direct competition with each other... no? some magi wont help others with out knowing and having demonstrated that they are infact good at what they do (to keep bad magic from entering the market and driving buyers out and lowering the standards we are all trying to elevate) so Dot once again welcome to the thread and my first advice would be to research your market area, I have a few ideas about getting restaraunt work and I know Sac has quite a few places I would look at if I where in the area.

Hi All,
Thanks Rich for the invite. I don't normally get a chance to come here, but it was nice to see that I had a message when I did. I am from Fremont and am a full-time magician...thats about it, I am not very interesting... Anyone going to the Jay Scott Berry Lecture? I went to his lecture about 5 years ago and it was the best lecture I have seen. By the way...Cal Magic Theater ROCKS! -Norman http://www.normanmagic.com |

Hi Norman,
I think I will make that drive to see Jay Scott Berry. Thanks to the positive recommendation. We had the opportunity to see you perform at a party in Vallejo last year and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Dan |

Hi all-
You fine folks can call me Gaddy. I'm checking in here -I've been in the Bay area for about 3 years now. Moved here from Chicago IL via Portland ME (don't ask- unless you've got a few hours and a 6 pack or two to kill...) Right now I'm pitching IT and D'lites, and Svengali decks for Houdini's Magic Shop on pier 39 (but please don't hold that against me I gotta pay the rent somehow! also, I'm assisting Jim Fassbinder with the SF Ghost Hunt this Hallow'een season running tours, telling spooky stories, and getting a bit of exercise in the process. You should all come! (But please don't burn me on the Haunted Key, thanks!) My interests include classic magic (Linking rings, cups and balls, egg bag ETC.) bizarre magic and mentalism. I'm still quite green, but I'm approaching magic from the side of theatre, which I was involved in for years, so I can even make a simple effect look and sound pretty good. I'd certainly be interested in getting together some evening at a local SF (or maybe east bay...) restaraunt/pub for a impromptu magic round table. Cheers! Gaddy

Welcome, oagwood and Gaddy,
I have never been to Houdini's, heard about it though. no one should give you a bad time for paying the bills magic would have died eons ago if not for the hucksters. a lot of groups here in the area to get together and talk magic S.F. misdirections has a group so does Cal Magic and there is always the SAM IBM OMC etc but ofcourse those are membership things... I agree and prefer to get together somewhere for a cold beer and magical conversation with a group of friends. I still would like to get together with some of you all and go see one of those off market shows (if we could ever find a group friendly date) until then, keep posting info as it becomes available and check in often to read whats happening hear in the most beautifull place in the world (and most expensive to live) Rich

Well, I checked in long ago, but just wanted to mention an upcoming event.
The City of Pleasant Hill and the Society of American Magicians #112 are putting on a show at the Community Center at 320 Civic Drive, Pleasant Hill on Friday, October 13, 2006 at 7 pm. The proceeds benefit both the Pleasant Hill Recreation District and the S.A.M. #112, who in turn will be using part of the proceeds to benefit the Society of Young Magicians. I really believe in supporting the SYM, because they are tomorrow's magicians! Plus, they are an awesome bunch of kids. The show will include both professional magicians and SYM youth performers. Our daughter, Magic by Danielle, will be one of the performers that night. Tickets are being sold in advance and advanced registration is required. The number to call is 925-676-5200. Tickets: $10/Adult, $7/child. |

EsnRedshirt, please don't hesitate to introduce yourself to Dan (Zazz) and I if you are able to attend! We'll be easy to spot...we are never too far from our daughter!
I'm not really sure what to expect at this show because we have never attended it before. Our daughter performed in the first Share the Magic show that was held at Diablo Valley College, which had stadium seating, which was very nice! Since this is at the community center I would advise arriving as early as possible to get a good seat. I wish that I could give you a line-up of the magicians, but I don't know exactly who is performing. Hope to see you there, Kristen |
