Misdirections is a terific magic shop well stocked and in a cool neiborhood with lots of fun restaraunts well worth your time. let us know when you and your brother will be here and we can get you a rundown on shows and events at that time. more later Rich

Thanks for contacting me, Calamari. I'm in the central valley (Tracy). I'm the owner of MJM Magic, so that in addition to raising a family with a 2 year old daughter keeps me pretty busy, as you can imagine!
I also regularly commute to the south bay area on the weekends to visit friends and family in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. It's good to see that there are so many lovers of magic right here in the bay area!

6!
I have about ten good buddies/friends in the SF Bay Area magic scene, but most of them don't use the Café. I find it a consistently useful resource. Regards, AtPG

Good to see everyone,
here is some info about the up coming OMC Interclub Stage Magic Competition, go to their website for more info and a link to a ticket purchase site if you would like to go. Rich The Oakland Magic Circle is the oldest independent magic club west of the Mississippi. Each year we invite the best magicians in the SF Bay Area to compete in our Interclub Competition. One of the Bay Areas most popular magic events, it features a gourmet Spaghetti Dinner (vegetarian sauce available) and Show. You are invited to join us for an evening of magic, wonder and great food. This is a family event, and children are half price. The ticket prices are $12 for adults, and $6 for children (12 & under), and there's no service charge.

It would be nice to know more about all of you, for those of you that don't know me, I will start by saying, My name is Rich Stewman and I have been performing here in the Bay Area for almost 13 years now as one half of the Flying Calamari Brothers, I do know quite a few of you and hope to get to know the rest better.
As I was saying to Tom above I think it would be fun for a bunch of us to get together and maybe check out the Off Market Theater or something like that. anyone interested? Rich

Hi Rich-
Thanks for contacting me. I didn't know about y'all! I perform mainly at private events, although I did a mindreading act last night at the Club Deluxe on Haight Street in SF, as part of a monthly show called, "Little Minsky's Burlesque and Variety Show". I have performed there before, around a year ago. It's got a cult following and the room was packed. Lots of inebriated hipsters, howling at the strippers, and quite receptive to acts like me who didn't take their clothes off! Bob Taxin |

Dear Rich,
Very kind of you to include me in your roundup of locals. I have been for some time a rather private amateur, but enjoy the creative process of magic problem solving, practicing and perfecting solutions, and developing presentations that (hopefully) fit my character. For various reasons occupational and personal, I do not perform.I am a member of SAM, and OMC (which reminds me I am overdue in sending in my dues), but rarely get to meetings due to my work schedule (why can't they be Fri or Sat afternoons -- never mind I know, Bob Steiner explained it to me -- makes perfect sense). Would be interested in getting together with others and the Off Market theater sounds good if the timing works out. Anyone know what Paul Nathan is up to? Greatly enjoyed his "Devil in the Deck" show and took a couple of sets of layman friends who also enjoyed it. Cheers and regards to Bay Area brethren, Michael

Thanks for contacting me. I'm here in San Jose. I perform only for friends and family now, with maybe an ambition sometime later in life of doing magic at street fairs and such. That's way down the road, though, because I have two very young children (ages 2-1/2 and 8 weeks) and a full time job at Apple Computer. As a result, it's very difficult to find the time to meet up with other magicians. I mostly just watch magic videos, read the Café, and read books.
The other night I did attend my first IBM meeting, where they held a closeup competition. I'm trying to figure out if I have the time to attend more meetings. It's nice to know there are so many other locals interested in magic. I'll stay tuned to the Café for more information. -David |

Hello:
Thanks for the responses, everyone! I have a couple PM's I haven't gotten to yet...today's been busy, so I plan on taking care of them tonight. I don't want to get off topic, but I want to let Bay area folks know what a great medical center/hospital you all have in the Davies Center. The Supposed-World Renown Mayo Clinic here in Scottsdale gave my brother a bleak prognosis, but he found out about the Davies Center in San Francisco. The doctors there saved his eye, rebuilt part of his face, and stopped the cancer from getting to his brain. Looking at him now, you would never guess the ordeal he's been through - the radiation treatements are just a precaution against a "skip cancer" so he's well on the road to recovery. My family is so greatful to the Davies Center. We plan on coming out this month. Last time when we were killing some time walking around Fisherman's Wharf, I was amazed to see Jerry Salazar working the street. I saw him at a convention competition in the early 80's. Lastly, both my brother and I were surprised by how friendly San Francisco is. We are typical out-of-towners that don't know where we're going most of the time, and must have asked 20 people for directions. Everytime, the person went out of his/her way to make sure we got to where we needed. If it weren't so expensive, I'd move to San Francisco in a heartbeat. I've even started pulling for the Giants! Ron- just watch out for those Raiders fans. They're very committed... or maybe it's should be committed? I always get it mixed up...

Ron, I hope your experience with S.F. continues to be as great in the future, it is nice to hear your comments. and yes we Raider fans can be a little emotional (I was born and raised in Oakland and am a fan) but we are mostly harmless, unless you happen to root for another team, well then all bets are off.
LOL Rich

Hi there, and thanks to Rich for the PM.
I'm out in Livermore, where we can look out our bedroom window and literally see the cows going home -- wherever home is. Let's see... aside from that, I've been w/ IBM since 1967 or '68, when I joined at sixteen, and still have all my old LR's somewhere to prove I've paid my dues... My magic nowadays is mostly focused on hanging out at the Café and writing my column here, although I hope to make it up to Gerry's one of these days. At some point, when time frees up a bit, I'm hoping to design and offer some props for sale, or maybe do a book on how to use theatrical techniques in magic. I'm one of those who hasn't performed in front of an audience for umpteen years. I just had a weird thought: how do you perform in back of an audience? Anyway, nice to know this thread is here, and I'll check in now and then.

Greetings from San Leandro.
Although I do not perform as I used to do, I try to get to the OMC every month. And speaking of the OMC, they are having their INTER CLUB compitition the first Tuesday of September. NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR!! Tickets are sold only through http://www.brownpapertickets.com Do a search for OMC. 12 bucks gets you a Pasta Dinner and show. No longer a "spaghetti feed" Click here to view/download attached file.
