Does anyone have any idea how to make this work. I want to have a spectator on stage holding a rope. The rope is holding a heavy object up and it is suppose to fall when the spec lets go. I would like the rope to suddenly release, leaving the spec holding what appears to be the broken end of the rope, but the truth is that I caused the rope to part when my timing was right.

Any thoughts?

Does the rope have to appear to haul the object up initially, or is it already in place? Assuming the rope must be over some type of pulley (even if only in effect)where does the rope appear to break?

I can imagine at least one method for causing the rope to separate that would take care of the visual aspects, but the trick is going to be giving the spectator the sensation of weight on the rope suddenly being released.

If the rope goes through a hanging pulley, what if it also passes through some type of very small, yet sharp, "cutter"? This would simply be a set of very sharp "jaws", painted black, attached to the same mount as the pulley. They could be set off by remote control. The effect would look real, because it is! Just get a good supply of rope...

How about joining the two sections of rope with a magnet or even with fine thread. A remote brake on the pulley could hold the rope taut, but could be released by the magician when ready, and the thread would break.

Another idea (though perhaps more elaborate) is to have the heavy object release through a remote controlled electromagnet. The object drops when the electromagnet is depowered and the rope is left hanging with the remaining part of the magnet.

How heavy an object? I have a feeling electromagnets aren't going to be strong enough, particularly if the rope has to haul the object up in the first place.
