I saw the movie last night.
It's good to finally see magic portrayed positively in a movie. Usually magicians are portrayed as villains and/or geeks. As a magician, it took me a while to suspend my disbelief with respect to the impossibilities of the illusions presented. Then again, it gave me a taste of what Robert Houdin's illusions might have looked to a 19th century audience. This is a must see, either at the theatre or on video. Jean-Luc |

Several friends and I received passes to an advance screening of The Illusionist. It's based on a short story by one of my favorite authors, so I went into the screening with the usual aprehension: "Man, I hope they don't make a mess of it."
I needn't have worried. The cast is excellent, and even though the production budget was minimal in this day and age, the film is very pretty and has a wonderful fairy tale quality. (It helped that they filmed in Prague, where such atmosphere doesn't need to be manufactured.) The plot of the movie is somewhat different from the story. The main conflict in the story is political and philosophical. In the movie, the conflict has been made more personal. The changes work, in that they help to involve the audience emotionally. After the screening, we had a chance to meet the director-screenwriter and ask him some questions. He was intelligent and articulate, and his thoughts about magic were very interesting to hear. The Illusionist is a smart and well-crafted little movie, one that credits the audience with some intelligence. That alone is worth the ticket price. Next up is The Prestige, a movie based on a novel about two rival magicians. Man, I hope they don't make a mess of it. |

I'll chime in on it too --
I was part of a sneak preview two nights ago (I actually got to open for the film), and it was an honor to be associated with such a quality product. Edward Norton was enigmatic and darkly dignified in the title role -- and for the magic geeks, actually does some legitimate handwork that gives credibility to his performance (even when the magic skips off into digital effects-land), including contact juggling, billiard-ball rolls, and coin productions. Jessica Biels is beautiful and believable as the aristocratic woman he loves. But the actor who really walks off with the show is Paul Giamati, whose performance as the chief of police is multilayered, crafty, and quite wonderful. It's a good story, even though the writing can be formulaic and a wee bit anachronistic at times. And the look and sound of the film -- cinematography by Dick Pope (Topsy-Turvy, Dark City), score by Philip Glass (Dracula, Mishima), location by Prague -- give a gravity and richness to the material. On a personal note, I do wish that all the magic in the film had been achieved through true stage-magic means (which the director, Neil Burger, had expressed he was after), but that's just magic-fan stuff. To the general public, even when it's engaging in digital wizardry, The Illusionist communicates a sincere respect for magic. Best, Neil

The Illusionist is based on the short story "Eisenheim the Illusionist" by Steven Millhauser. It's in the collection titled The Barnum Museum. Millhauser is a wonderful writer whose works often incorporate magical themes.

I do not feel worthy to follow David Parr on anything, but I do feel honored!
The movie was wonderful. It is hard to find here in the San Jose area. Only the theaters known as art theaters are playing it. My wife and I went and enjoyed it very much. We liked the period it was set in. The villian was not so much evil as all powerful. Yes, he was evil too, but it is his power that was scary. There is just no way to fight him, unless you have powers of your own. Prestige is next. I am still waiting for the War Magicain. Maybe this movie will help. |

Even though--as Neil accurately points out--many of the effects could not be recreated in an actual stage setting today, I think this is the only way to have conveyed a glimpse of what audiences of old would have experienced watching the performances of legends like Robert Houdin. Ed Norton and Paul Giamati have always impressed me, and elements of Ed's performance makes me think that he is actually genuinely involved in magic. I'm now anxious to see how Prestige stacks up.

I loved the movie as well. My favorite thing about seeing it was the reactions of some of the people leaving the theater. They were discussing the magic they had seen in the movie as if they had just seen it on a stage. They were trying to figure it out, saying it must have been this or that. The general theme seemed to be excited awe.
It was really fun to see.

The reviews from the "real" reviewers are rolling in, and most (Chicago Tribune, NY Times, Time magazine, Village Voice, Chicago Sun-Times) are very positive.
