I thought that tonights show was great! No exposure. Much more personable. Solid effects. Lot's of humor.
I liked it! And from me, that's quite a change. What did you guys think? Hope you haven't given up on Criss yet? Dave

Dave:
I gave up on him about a month ago. I enjoyed the first season, I really enjoyed his stage show in New York, but I have not enjoyed the recent activity. Life's too short and there is too much other good programming to watch and books to read. There was this movie about giant scorpions on a plane on the SCIFI channel. Less camara tricks and editing than Criss's show. A lot more beleivable! Foergot, I rented the SHAGGY DOG movie. Tim Allen turns into a dog. I heard he does it on the street too. Tony |

I am with Tony. I have not watched for the last few weeks. Maybe I will watch next weeks just to see if he can win me back. I am all for giving tenth chances!

The show is lacking something. It is extremely well done, but loses my attention quickly. Whats lacking is belief. For most at home its easy to just dismiss it as camera tricks as many of us believe it to be.
The main factor that's missing from these shows is a purpose. at least Davids last special had him challenging himself showing you a feat of impossibility that he trained for. Criss is just a hodge podge of effects strung together for no reason. |

Last night was better but I agree with Scott and Tony. I really enjoyed the first season but I lose interest much more quickly this season.
I have been a Criss Angel fan since before the television series but I wish he would do material that is comparable to what he used to do. Just speaking as a fan here. |

The first season he kept to a more consistant character / magic personae - it has been too all over the place and thus it is hard to buy into his premise since his source of powers and his style keep shifting radically - in my humble opinion... not being a TV guy - and maybe those of you that do a TV series can comment on it - the drive to keep doing effects and new ones and the sponsors / producers influence likely make it difficult... hence why I think maybe the magicians that do a special once in a while come across much better than an ongoing series - they in the long run will keep getting call backs for more $ versus the danger of a lot of $ for a series that could potentially by the end make you look mediocre...
On the other hand - its really the public that will decide - I'd say we are a very tiny part of that voice?

Agree with Scott, I felt that something was missing, noticed lack of continuity.
Expected more.. |

Well, he's quit giving away secrets. That's good. Perhaps sales of his marketed items have dropped, since a few magicians have seen the hypocrisy(sp) in that, and he want's to make amends?

DANNY! that's it! A mentalist believes he can read minds when hes on. An illusionist is a theatrical master of magic. An escape artist often a dare devil.
The best I liked criss's personae was when he was being sawed in half or with the elephant. He's good, he just needs to justify or create a personae for what he does. OUR mentalism looks like any long haired kid can do what we do. |

I'm confused by your last statement. Do you mean when Criss attempts it, or as we perform in general. If it is the latter, I disagree wholeheartedly. Tony |

I heard that there are still some more 'secrets' he is going to reveal. I was told it was 6 in total, to help promote his new DVD
I do look forward to the day when you post something constructive.

Just exactly is his power?

Hey Scott - Danny was quoting me
In any case - as mentioned on another thread - his character in the first season really had a texture with his "entourage" of bizarre characters you would see inbetween acts - and my fav is still the nude reclined woman covered in Sushi... but there you got a feeling of a style of Mindfreak - bizarre mentalism - shocking a bit "out there" - and now its wavering between that and "conventional" - i.e. appearing with traditional magicians, doing vanishing acts, etc.... c'mon be the Mindfreak.... or wear a mask again and do a new series! (Oh yeah, he did that)

David Blaine has always been the king. His bizarre shamanistic magic works. Do an effect and it's done. Criss is hodgpodged all over using, what I assume is Banacheks mental knowledge on hypnosis, Derren Brown like stunts, the mind freak, side show stunts, and puked up magic.
Please stick to the theme/character! The reason Copperfield was scorned over one of his last special is because he left that image we so love behind, and tried to be David Blaine. Because Crisstos has a half pseudo-answer, no where enar as well done as Browns, I am lost in every episode. So he comes out and says he's a magician but some of it is real? Please put the white makeup back on and prance around with beasts on stilts. That was you! Posted: Aug 3, 2006 6:43pm ------------------------------------------- Sorry just thought I'd add a few more things. Don't try and be Blaine. Don't try and be Banachek. Don't try and be Derren Brown. You are you! Be Criss Angel! You were the freak, the oddball, now you're playing with monkeys? I miss the dark stage show with all the theatrics. The escapes the essence of evil in the air. that's what I think of when I think Mind Freak. Never once do 4 kids lifting up a car (no engine?) ever come into mind.... |

Even on a local level...it is important to stay relatively true to a certain character or style.
When one has national exposure...they sometimes will go to almost any lenghts,to maintain entertainment credibility. It's a job!($$$) I do not agree with this, and I do not know about the aforementioned ..Copperfield trying to be Blaine (paraphrased),which IMO I doubt. IMHO:When any performer alter's their regular personna(and it does not matter what media or public level one is at),they are walking a proverbiable plank. With very ,'very' few exceptions there is no upside. Rich ps.I think most serious performer's understand this premise. |

I have said it before and it applies here.
My grandfather always told me "you gotta dance with the girl that brung ya". He spoke horrible english, but made a fantastic point. To reinvent oneself takes time. It takes time from the last time you were seen, letting yourself almost be forgotten. Look at Madonna. Does TONS of reinvention. BUT she waits. Wrestlers do the same thing. It can be done, but not on a week to week basis.

And...I had the idea of people lifting up a car before... my plan was to get a one hour special out of it. The way he did it was crap. It was just another magic trick. (Sigh), Alex Linian
