Do you close up expert experts perform on a table? If so, what table do you recommend and why?

From reading the posts at the Café, a large majority of close up workers do in hands effects where a table is not required.
I love formal table magic, the tricks that require a table but have no preference for a table. A dining room table, T.V. tray, card table or whatever is fine for me. Give me my close up pad and a chair and all is good. I would like a portable, custom table that's a little shorter than a dining room table and possible a built in servante and small storage area. If you really need to set up someplace I suggest you look around in the Cafés "The side walk shuffle" for some possible solutions. Good luck, |

There are 2 kinds of close-up. One is strolling (restaurant, party or event). At this kind of event you would probably not want to be burdened with lugging around a table. I don’t know anyone who takes a table to a strolling event. Some, myself included, don’t even want to carry around a case or close-up pad while strolling. Although many people do like to carry a (small) case while strolling. Another kind of “close-up” is done during a small show, say in a living room during a party. This show is more like platform magic (small stage show). For this kind of show tables are much more common. I would stay away from wooden tables as they will be heavy and not last well while touring. Music stores have nice tables and stands that will not be heavy, last and not cost too much. Good luck Chris |

Looking at the Gig Rig, I can hear my father in law complaining about the price and mumbeling he could make a better one for less $$$.

I use the large tabletops on my website with a restaurant tray stand.
I use a pouch as a table servante and can imagine nothing better. It is an extremely lightweight setup but solid enough to take a beating and stay still. When I'm not going for lightweight, I use the tabletop on a lefler pro table and still use the pouch as a servante. Usually the Lefler pro table is stationary but one one or 2 occassions, I rolled around with it. This allows me to use the exact same setup regardless of where I perform.

When performing outside, I use one of tese tables http://www.oakfoldingtables.com/ VERY sturdy and MUCH cheaper than every "magic" table I've seen. They were able to customize one for me that was a few inches higher and put a small lip all the way around.

I had one custom built. It's bigger than most. You can see it on the avitar.
e-mail me for info. I had my brother build me a smaller table with a drawer I can send you a picture of if you want. They are my 2 workhorses. |

Wooden restaurant tray stands look great and hold up really well, if you spend the cash required to get a good one. I've been using the same one for almost 20 years, and it hasn't acquired a wobble, yet. It's light, too.
Sometimes, for small indoor groups, I use a Mel Babcock packaway table. I've also been known to use a shotgun shell crate, covered in velcro compatible fabric, on a Eureka base, if I need space to store props under the table top. I never use a table when doing strolling work. |
