There are some very creative people on this forum.
I'm basically an amateur when it comes to mentalism. I do some free shows occasionally, but I am definitely not a pro. How many of you actually perform regularly for a fee? How many of you perform occasionally for a fee? |

I was a full-time pro magician for 35 years. I'm semi-retired now. I have done several all-mentalism shows, with no magic tricks, per se. The mentalism was, of course, done by normal "mentalist" techniques, though. I don't claim to be psychic!
I've translated a lot of good mentalism and mental magic (there's a big difference!) from German into English. John, if you have Paramiracles or any of Ted Lesley's recent notes, you have some of my work.

I have been working fulltime in this biz for 15 years.
Left my job as a computer engineer in 91. A year or 2 ago I was getting burned out and wanted to start a software business. Strangely, at that point I got picked up by Speaker Bureau's and got progressively bigger and bigger jobs. The $ got larger and the shows got shorter. Suddenly I don't feel burnt out anymore. So who knows where I will end up. Tom |

HI,
My origin job was in computer science and did magic and mentalism for many years semi-pro. Not I do menatalism on regular basis on stage and most of all times coporate shows. Beside that I regularly hold seminars for NLP and others so I can fill up the days I don't perform. Since mentalism market here in Austria slowly is getting better I often am booked for my seminars by companies AND also to perform my show. QUite good synergy-effect. The best to you Thomas |

Im performing mentalism for 11 years now was a part time magician then mentalist and I'm a full time mentalist since 1999 I mostly do corporate shows stage only (I got so tired of close up work 3x work for 1/10 of the $).
But to be honest being a full time performer is not always easy, your hobby becomes your job, some part of the year are hard some entire years are sometime hard its like a roler coaster ride. So don't rush to do it full time I admire those who have a "real" job cause once you tasted the full time you cant go back. |

Im 23 years old,I have been a full time performer for the last 3 years.I was one never for the regular 9 to 5.I perform on a regular basis ( 1 hour performances) I work in comedy clubs, corporate events, weddings(after the meal before the band)and theatres(400-500 people)Highest price commanded for a single show was 2,300 euro, lowest 50 Euro (10 minute slot in a club )On average I charge 500 euro for an appearance. So much work to do behind the scences especially if you don't have an agent(constant calling,promoting,newspaper/radio articles, sorting out posters, tickets, etc etc By the ways since Im here,to those I promised the dvd's to...they are done edited and I have shipped about 10 to various agents and agencies,I promise I will send them off to ya's very soon! I used to be a full-time comedian but got steadily sicker and sicker of performing. I didn't get into magic until much later.

Hey Philosophry! May I ask what turned you off performing? It was obviously something you once loved so what happenned that turned you against it,was it a gradual thing where over time your dream became just a job(burned out etc) or was it specific certain thing that made you tired of the biz?I'd love to know and am very interested.
Bill I pose to same question to you,Im sure I read that you were once a stand up comic (sorry Im not 100percent positive)but would you like to comment on what made you tired of it please. You guys have a lot more experience that I and to hear your stories would Im sure provide something for me to think about. Thanks guys |

Hi John,
Magic was always a hobby and never replaced my full time job. I used to do quite a few shows as a "regular" magician (cards, sponges, and all that fun stuff). I liked the reactions when I did my "mental magic" sets and began to add more of the effects to my routines. There came a point where I had to decide what kind of show I wanted (magic or mentalism) and I decided to go the mentalism route. I stopped performing for a while in order to start fresh. I did a couple of shows, went back, refined my act, and did some more. I started business school in the evenings and watched my free time disappear. Finished my MBA program and began performing again. I did make one mistake (well, many more than 1 but 1 big mistake). I did a favor for the friend of a family member and did a magic show for their kids. Wow, I had forgotten how much harder children's magic is (okay, maybe not harder... just different). I have currently stopped performing large venues as I want to put together a good set and I have been experimenting a bit and refining my character. -Carlos
