I had been looking to leave the contractor world and go back to government work, but I sure wasn't expecting to do it like this. Thankfully, we have enough set aside that we can go for a couple of months without my income. We try to think that everything happens for a reason and that maybe this was the push I needed to actually leave the company I was with, but it's still not fun.
On the positive side, I have a couple of shows (my first two) booked and maybe they will lead to more. I don't think magic will bring in the kind of income I was making before, but it might help enough that I don't have to take just any old job to survive until the right one comes along. Govt jobs take a while to get into so I'm looking private sector again. Thanks Jim |

Good luck Jim, in finding a new job that you will enjoy. And you never know...magic may provide enough income. There are many who make a living performing. |

I have found in my life that, every time something 'bad' happened, it turned out for the good in the long run. When I lost a job, I ended up with a better one. When I got sick and recovered, I had a renewed appreciation for life. When I became disabled, I enjoyed the abilities I still had even more, and developed new ones.
Of course, in the 'short run' I worried and fretted while waiting for the 'long run' to kick in. Hang in there, and keep a positive attitude. Good luck!

Funny, as I was just coming back to write that everything happens for a reason.
I did indeed find a better (on several fronts) job, that allows me to work far less than the 80-100 hours a week a was working without losing anything salary wise. The new job also provides what I was missing from Govt work, with the added flexibility and freedom of the contractor/civilian world. All of this adds up to more time to focus on the important (family) and fun (Magic, Photography) stuff. During the time off, I wandered through the woods with my camera a lot and had a great time 'decompressing.' If you would like to see some of the results of my relaxation period, some are posted here: http://www.pbase.com/jimpoor Thanks for your thoughts, Jim |

Thanks! I actually got my first real interest in photography over your way. I spent several months in the Alice Springs area.

I agree. The shots are really beautiful. The ones of birds in flight are most impressive. I know that they require a fast telephoto lens and fast film to capture properly. And lots of patience!!!
What kind of equipment do you have? What speed film did you use? I think you can tell that I, too, used to be into photography quite heavily.

Clynim,
Thanks. The eagles are current my favorite, as until recently, I had never gotten an up-close view of one. I shoot digital now with a Nikon D2X and usually a 600/f4. I usually use the ISO setting of 100. |

The Alice Springs area?
At Pine Gap? The desert can be such a beautiful place to photograph, and I've seen photos of Uluru (Ayers Rock) that could bring tears to the eye. I'm in the tropics on the Great Barrier Reef and spent nearly a decade performing in a wildlife park. I got interested in photography there so I have boxes of slides of crocs, emus, cassowaries, roos etc. I think the relaxation you took must have been worthwhile because your pics are very 'calm' and 'peaceful'. The composition is beautiful. |

Yes, Pine Gap.
I didn't make it to Uluru, but I did get to King's Canyon. I also spent about a day a week walking between Alice Springs Station and downt town through the river beds etc. My wife & I want to make it to Kakadu (I think I spelled it right) sometime. |

Kakadu is beautiful, but a feral pest - the cane toad(bufo marinus) has made it over there - and they always damage the native wildlife when they arrive unfortunately.
Thhe toads were originally released near Cairns where I live and our garden is full of them - instead of the native frogs which should be there. (My next door neighbour, who is an environmentalist and peace activist, is currently going to court in the Northern Territory for breaking into Pine Gap) |

Hey Jim,
Awsome photos. don't be satisfied with what you have now... don't ever let that hunger in you die to do more in life (after all its only one life that we have)... Work harder, spend enough time to pursue your dreams... One day I m sure they ll become reality....the word Impossible itself has the meaning in it i-m-possible.... have fun... |
