Hi guys (and gals),
I'm an amateur performer, doing mostly close-up coin magic in nightclub settings. I am standing as often as I am sitting, and dressed fairly casually, no ties or tuxes for me. I usually do my performances between sets while working as a musician, so I don't have the option to prepare myself much (I.E. hook anything up) before moving to the tables to perform. I am hunting for a good jacket to wear while performing, primarily because I don't own anything that allows for easy sleeving. I'm trying to stay away from anything too formal, as jeans, a T-shirt, and a tux jacket would look rather out of place, and the clubs are just too hot for that kind of thing. I have been reading about topits and I am very intrigued by the concept, but I know almost nothing about them and apparently there are many designs. Is there a kind of topit, or alteration, that can be made to a regular jacket that will allow for magical effects with small objects, without turning the jacket into a delicate or uncomfortable prop? I know that Michael Ammar sells a pattern, but I don't know how involved its use is. Once the pattern is applied is there an additional setup involved before performing? I am not trying to use my clothing to create the effects, but if there are extra tools I can use to enhance what I do with my hands then all the better! I'm just trying to do my homework now, so I don't have to pick up a second jacket down the road should I decide to add to it. I know there are a few videos on topit use, but I am trying to determine if it is practical for my situation before I invest in videos to learn the techniques involved. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Jonathan |

Once the jacket is on Ammar's topit takes only a minute for the "additional setup".
Topit's vary in design to some degree. With some retrieval of the object is easier than others. A sports jacket is fine and some styles work OK with vests. There are also a couple of other types of 'body sevantes'. Necktie. Waistband. Some folks use Sol Stone's method called "Shirting the Issue" for coins and small items. |

Thank you for the information. Would Ammar's topit pattern work with a sports jacket, or is there a different pattern you would recommend? I am mostly interested in vanishing (and if possible, reproducing) coins, not decks of cards or billards balls or white tigers.
Thanks! -Jonathan |

Ammar's pattern will work with a sports jacket.
It allows you to retrieve the tossed object from a pocket. |

Does anyone know where I can find a fancy jacket to be worn in nightclub strolling? I use to own a nice blue one (like Bancacheck) but gave it away long ago. I love the nice shade of blue on that one. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the information on the Topit, I really appreciate it!
As for jackets, I have had great luck at Goodwill (If you're in the US), but you can go to any secondhand shop. Sometimes you can find very nice clothes for super cheap because they were donated. I found a perfect, classy tux jacket for about $7 last year! -Jonathan |

If you are going to use the Ammar topit I found that it tends to work a little better if you raise the lowest point at the back, this way no matter how light the item, it will allways roll back to the front for easy retrival. About 6 inches should do it I find.
