Now that you have called me an absolute idiot and a liar Vandy, I believe that you sir have earned my not very well known useless post of the year award. Josh asks what would you do? I answer honestly and what I recieve from you are insults? Totally pointless IMHO. Good luck with the Jeopardy thing, I'll be rooting for you.

Thanks Jerrine. I failed the Jeopardy test. I believe I will turn to selling magic tricks to earn extra money because I will not be on the show this season!
I'm just trying to keep it real, honestly, would sell the Erdnase color change for half a million bucks? If you say you wouldn't I'll believe you,(no skepticism, I will absoultely take you at your word) but think about it and answer honestly. I think you would be foolish not to if you had the chance. Even if you didn't want the money, think of all the good you could do with it. Vandy P.S. Where do I pick up my Award?

Too bad about the Jeopardy gig.
Awards are awarded at the Year End Award Special. Wait for iiiiiiiiiiiiittttttt. The color change in question would not be sold by me. I don't sell explainations, lessons, secrets, methods, knowledge, gaffs, instant downloads, books, or DVD's of my latest worst material. I'm selling pre-cooked Magic, ready to experience now. It's not stored on your hard drive, it's in your memory. Where, like a fine wine so I hear, it gets better with age. |

Seeing as I'm such a nice guy, I'll do it for $450K AND I'll fly out and teach it to you. Sincerely, Wayne Stevenson The SpookClub |

Now that a bargain! I really want that color change but I'll have to save up my $$$!!
Jerrine. I believe you. But I'm at a loss as to what to say. I guess all I can say is that if you truly would not teach someone the Erdnase change for half a million dollars...God Bless ya.

Kid walks away with an explanation for the magic he just seen. I don't see how that's any different. Not that I'm condoning it. Try to get a guitarist to teach you how to play a song for $20. I had a similar situation and told the individual that everything in my act, individually is for sale. I don't give anything away. You couldn't get out of the way and dodge the question fast enough as he said "How much!".
I offered him the two effects for $10,000.00 each. Both effects in public domain but he was interested in MY twist and take on it - like certain body parts, doesn't everyone have one? A "twist" or "take" on something that is. He said I was out of my frickin' mind and then some *&!!#@!$0!!! He told me that he could make them up himself. I told him if I could make them up anyone could. Reminded him if he did and then performed them my way, he'd be stealing from me and a few others who've used it and originated it a couple of hundred years ago. I'd then have no choice but to do something nasty to keep him from doing it again. He asked if that was a threat. I assured him it was since both effects are best performed with all 10 fingers intact. Slimeball. |

OK here's the follow-up. I taught him, Karate Kid style.
I had him work on an overhand shuffle. When he had it down, I taught him 1 card control (to the bottom, leave on bottom, back to top). When he got that I showed him how to hold back during a riffle and a basic Hindu shuffle. Over the course of a week he worked hard and showed improvement, even though, to him, I hadn't shown him a magic trick. He practiced all over the weekend. Assured that he was serious, I taught him a DL with a push off get-ready. My real Karate Kid moment was the next day when I informed him that he had already learned a force. With all the tools in his belt, I took the plunge and taught him Red Hot Momma. His response? "This will get me laid tonight." We then had a long talk about rehearsal. It's been a week and a half. He has all of the sleights down, and has heard more about psychology and theory then most kids learn in their first 2 years. He also hasn't shown anyone yet. So far I have no regrets. And no $20 either.

Thanks for ruining the art form @#$%&^*. I was testing you, And you failed. EXPOSER!! I don't like you anymore and I'm taking your poster off of my bedroom wall. There goes Red Hot Momma, now I have to remove it from my act because you exposed it. Nice job.
You should have taken the 20 dollars, you could have bought a dagger to plunge into the back of your fellow magicians. I do like the Karate Kid approach though. Pretty sneaky.

I'm deliberately exposing so all of you lazy magicians will come up with new material.
Oh did I mention we've done all of this over the net? We've been posting all of the lessons and practice on YouTube.

I just got here. I have a question.
What happened to the $20? Are you telling me that you gave up earning the $20 by just telling this guy the secret, and instead taught this guy actually how to do the trick correctly?...and for free??? What kind of ethics are these? :hmm:
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

What kind of ethics are these? And you didn't even get your car waxed, or your garden fence built or painted. Josh, you're a disgrace to 80's movies fans everywhere. Miagi is turning in his grave. FWIW, I'd have done the same thing. I'd rather teach a trick properly for free than sell the secret for $20. On the other hand I'd rather give away a secret for $500,000 than teach a trick properly for free. But I'm strange that way. Interesting question, how much do people feel secrets are worth. If you asked 100 magicians for sealed bids of how much it would take to get them to give up some basic secrets like the Double Lift, The Glide etc, how much to you think they'd fetch? -MM |

OK, I've posted this before, but here it is again.
The rule is not "Never give away a trick.". The rule is actualy "Never teach a trick (I prefer "effect" but whatever) to anyone who is not likely to perform it, and perform it well." Followed closely by the rule, "Never teach anyone a trick who is not likely to obey the rules and traditions of the magic community.". Express both of these rules to him, then tell him "There are two, and ONLY two way to enjoy magic. One is by enjoying it AS magic. Enjoying the expansion of the boundries of possibilities. The only other way it is possible to enjoy magic, is the appreciation of the reactions of others enjoying magic in the first way. Thus, to lose the first, but not gain the second, is to lose magic all together. It will be a great disappointment. Learning the mechanics of effects always is a disapointment, to one degree or another. If you wish to walk the path of a magician, know that it is a very difficult one. A path strewn with the jaded, disolousioned souls, who tried to walk it, but are now stuck in the limbo between enjoying magic as magic and the ability to perform magic entertainingly. The choice is entirely yours." If after that, he still wants to learn, then set him on the path. Teach him a few good public domain effects. Send him on the quest for the holy "Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic". Let him start the way we all started, or should have anyway. This process is a wonderful one, let him enjoy it. Let him enter our world with a guide. You can be that guide. Guide well. |

I would do far worse things than teach a card move for $500,000. (PM me for more details.)
Just make sure you get the $20. Go buy yourself an ice cream cone, maybe fuel up the car a bit. Go on. You deserve it. Really, though, I like what JackScratch had to say. That's the approach I tend to take. One time I was doing some devastating effects for the neighborhood kids. They wanted to know how I did them of course. We took a field trip to the library. I showed them where the magic books were, we checked some out. They were interested for a couple days, but they didn't have the fire. That's what will usually happen. You've shown them the way. It's up to them if they want to take it. You're there for them if they do. Come on, it's nice having someone you can talk about this stuff with in person. |

A week and a half for 20 bucks? You got hosed. What you need to do now is make him pay you, steal his wallet,(Apparently his girlfriend as well) and take his hubcaps.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
