Penn & Teller were on America's Got Talent, performing an illusion in which Teller was put into a Mis-Made-Girl type box, then taken apart and put on the platform, then each peice was opened to show a piece of him, no dummy. He was then put back together. Then as a suprise, they did it all a second time, but with a CLEAR box, and see thru platform. This of course revealed the entire routine. Very entertaining. Reminds me of when they performed the Cups and Balls with clear cups.
Anyone else see this?

I think the whole skit was blatant exposure and they should be eternally banned from this forum!
Oh... wait... they don't hang out here. Nevermind. |

I thought that they were among the least entertaining of the magicians to have been on the series...I was dissapointed, that bit is 15 years old!

I'm sure that this has been asked before, but what's the deal with Penn and Teller and all of the exposure? Is there an actual reason?

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

I happened to catch part of it -- it was one of my rare nights in front of the TV, and channel-surfing at that. I didn't realize the bit was 15 years old, but I thought it was very silly. For one thing, that platform w/ the flashing lights. Yikes.
Then when they brought out the clear box and opened the platform, and Penn said, "Criss Angel, this is for you!" I decied it was time to go back to pushing the button on the clicker. I don't know... it almost seemed to me that they picked a silly illusion to do and then expose. Then again, I didn't see the end of it, so I don't have a clue what they did.
That's our departed buddy Burt, aka The Great Burtini, doing his famous Cups and Mice routine

Oh yes, this is their "Blast Off!" routine. It is a silly effect, and while the routine does expose a method, the method is much more convoluted than ones used in other effects, and is actually more entertaining than the effect itself. Penn is known to have little respect for large scale illusions. Both of them are appreciative of talented sleight-of-hand, though.

Is this routine or method actually being used anywhere, by anyone else or was it ever??? I've never seen it before them. I also agree the high paced movements of Teller are the best part of the routine. Didn't see it last night but the version I saw years ago was excellent. The link MagicalOdyssey posted showed a much slower performance. ( thanks for posting that link MagicalOdyssey ) Best, Tim |

I can think of two illusions using a similar large base (not quite as thick) where the assistant is separated and body parts appear in boxes placed on the base. Franz Harary & Brett Daniels perform them.

It's the same routine that they have been performing in Vegas for years. They do two shows a night at $73/ticket at the Rio. The show room hold 2700 people. I don't really like the show. However, who cares what I are anyone thinks when they can demand that sort of ticket price night after night.

I do find it interesting how magicians perceive Penn & Teller.
It is perfectly OK for them to expose tricks and illusions. They do it with great comedic flare and style and it is quite artful and entertaining. In fact it can be said that the revelations themselves are more entertaining than the proper presentation of the trick. P&T do this kind of thing every night here in Vegas. They are the only ones who can get away with this. A lot of magicians here on the Café and elsewhere commend them for it. While at the same time, they just won't shut up about the Masked Magician specials from 8 years ago that nobody ever sees anymore and not too many people even remember. Interesting... --Jack |

I find it hard to believe that anyone was fooled before they "exposed" it. Were these people actually paying attention? Are you actually telling me that anyone with half a brain did not know what was going on? I know we are supposed to hate their so called exposure, but come on now. By the reaction of the audience I'd say that they too were not fooled by it and were not told anything they did not know about how it worked. I think the whole point of the routine was to poke fun at magicians who think they are actually fooling anyone and then confirm to the audience that they are in fact using the method that was so obvious to them.

On the same note...I do really enjoy their clear cups and balls routine...exposure perhaps... but I do think it leaves one with new respect for the art.
