I have a lot of harmonicas because when I was working in the music industry I could get them wholesale. Hohners aren't what they used to be and for the money Huang is probably the best around. A great learner's harp.
But if you go crazy, really crazy, and want a SWEET harp that bends notes like well-cooked spaghetti then drop the $60 on a Suzuki Overdrive. A buddy gave me one when they came out and it has been a favorite ever since. I was at Wal-Mart buying cat food just yesterday and saw a book and harmonica set (maybe with a CD) for like $10 that seemed to have an Overdrive knock off in it... almost bought it over the chance to have a throw-away Overdrive-like harp to keep in the car (must have harmonica in the car for traffic) but my hands were full! Maybe next time; heck I might be there later tonight. I forgot the dog food.

How difficult is it for a person to learn to play said harmonica? Keep in mind the person I ask about has no talent.

I learned the old fashion way at first...
The first song I played was ...I don't know how to play the harmonica... Then I found tabs in books..learning to blow and draw single holes... Then found lots of sites on the internet on songs and tabs... About 10 years ago I took lessons from a local guy with a national reputation. Still learning since begining the harp journey in college back in the 70's. Harris

Cool thread.
I got a hohner pro harp a while ago, before I got into magic. I used to be able to play a bit, got the hand of draw bends, but never really got past the beginner stage. Oddly my cat would be drawn to the sound and fuss all around and try to get at the harp. I assume she liked it any way. Any way, I think I'll dig it out again and go look at those sites and see if I can actually turn out a decent tune. Thanks to those who posted, I feel all inspired.

In case you disagree, remember that I claim to have years of experience judging other people.

Thank you Josh.
Everyone run out to your favorite imported music place and get a copy of Chase the Ace by the Groove Kings (the Australian one) to hear magician playing harp and singing. |

Sonny Boy. A genius choice to show how good the harp can be.

How about Little Walter? Beautiful phrasing and a gorgeous tone. Ry Cooder once suggested that Little Walter was probably the best musician ever to play the blues.
Here he is with HoundDog Taylor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TZ7omxqzag And with Koko Taylor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GG2v8LBcBU If anyone can find video of Walter playing solo, I'd love to see it. John
