Greetings! With the explosion of new-age topics, and teh general beliefs in things "mysterious", do you find that the *perception* of what you do has changed? As in, shifting from the psychic presentation to the body-language to the NLP-ing to whatever-the-flavor-of-the-month is?
There is a local fellow who does a brilliant rapid-calculation act (during his mentalism routine) but the general commentary is "So what? My calculator can do that..." |

to answer the first part, not really as I just posted elsewhere, it truly depends upon the perfomer and how he comes across. Most people can be made to beleive anything if it is presented correctly. Geller proved that in his heyday.
As for the calculator act. I bet anything it is in his presentation. My freind Arthur Benjamin of Mathemagic Fame is wonderful with his presentations. People are impressed with his ability, but he presents it to impress and not so much as look at this cool ability I have. YOu have to have some sort of showmanship do pull this off. I have seen bad memory experts as well, and I have seen good ones. Same as mentalists. I have seen different mentalists perform the same effect, both were technically good. But one was able to get a bigger reaction, the other, the folks just did not care, it was the "so what" attitude you mentioned. Again, it is all in the hands of the performer. Look at Blaine and how he can take something as silly as a folding coin and cause a sensation. How many time have you seen people use that tool and get a "so what attitude"? Same with a top change?
