I already have a sub-trunk illusion (or more precisely, will have soon), and am thinking of building an illusion or two myself to add to my small stage act. I have bought the Osbourne series 1-4 as well as the Grand Illusions of Magic book set, along with some other individual plans, but I have yet to decide on what to build.
My background: I have the tools required, but am not skilled with woodworking, so I'll have to take my time in order for my work to look decent enough to use. I have faith in myself, but obviously I won't be a cabinet maker any time soon. I'm considering the Temple of Tibet illusion, as well as a large Squared Circle, and I'm strongly considering a Shadow Box illusion. Would anyone have any suggestions or tips for me as I work towards my goal? Thanks in advance! Scott

The Osbourne book 3 is my favorite so far, but I still have to say that the plans that are included in the book are not all that clear--you'll be able to build the illusions, but you will be examining the plans closely time after time to get it right. None of the books I've read so far have "step by step" details--essentially you are told how the illusion works, given rough drafts of the plans themselves, and a presentation is provided. I suspect most people improvise when they make the illusions, making it their own in the process. That's kindof what I plan to do, but I'd sure appreciate some tips from those who have been there before me.

My first build ever was the "Queen's Cut" from Osborne #1. I used it for many years (luckily, I had a very limber assistant who later become my wife!) My next was "Palanquin" from Osborne #1. I also use THAT for many years, and my wife thanked me for the comfortable hiding space. My third was a "Temple of Benares" type illusion; I don't know where I got those plans.
Looks like I'd advise you to get Osborne's first book. I'd advise against the Shadow Box. It's not an easy trick to perform, lighting can be a pain, it requires a "pre load" of the assistant ... and that's why you see so many of them go for sale at Magic Auction. |
