Hey Everyone!
Okay, so I finally added Sean Bogunia's Ultimate Sketch Pad to my act and just used it for a show today. As I understand it, it's similar (though not the same) as the Axtell Drawing Board. So maybe people who do that can give me some feedback as well. My routine basically is a Spongebob routine (Spongesteve in this case), where I draw him, I look at the audience when I'm speaking to him, then I look at him when he is speaking. Here's the two things that I couldn't seem to get beyond when I finally did the routine for a living, breathing audience. First, they went NUTS when the picture started to animate. This isn't an exaggeration. I mean seriously nuts. To point that I had to skip some parts and whittle it down a bit just to get through it, they were that bonkers over what was happening. Now, I'm not a vent person, so when the pad is speaking I'm turning to the pad to do the talking. But I did have quite a few kids yelling out "that's not him, that's you!!!". Any good responses for this? Suggestions for handling the mayhem? I've had some kids go nuts for other routines I do, but I was unprepared for this. It shocked me. Any suggestions? Advice???? --Jon |

Do you use a mic?
If so, record a conversation of replies in "his" voice onto CD & then practice your timing to get both of you talking to each other. No mic? Practice venting, it's not as hard as it seems to get some basic words down, try saying, "yes" out of the corner of your mouth without moving your lips, it's not that tough. Use words that stay away from P's & T's !! Let me ask you a question: Do you find the flip and tear to be easy & believable at the end? How visible is the mouth?...10' away....20' away....40'away? Thanks |

Thanks...some good ideas...I might end up using an Axtrack from Axtell...I've got to check them.
I love the sketch pad. The flip and tear is quick and easy. And yes, very believable. After I gave the picture to a girl in the front row I caught her touching the eyes and mouth to see if they moved. It's that good. The mouth is nicely visible. The show I did yesterday was for 250 kids...and not one complained that they couldn't see the animations on the pad. All of them got it...too well LOL. They loved it. --Jon |

The AxTrax will not work with the sketch pad, only with the Axtell Magic Drawing Board. They are programmed to include the crazy bit at the end of the Drawing Board routines where you erase the drawings while they are talking. For example the Houdini routine allows you to draw Houdini and he does a trick in your show, then he does the "great Drawing Board Escape" and you erase him off, first his ears (what did you say?) then his nose (nasal voice) then you erase his mouth (mmm-mmm-mmm) finally his eyes! It's the best part of drawing the character in the first place and always gets killer applause. It's all on the AxTrax routines.

Vents across the world have the same problem. Even the really good ones will occasionally have a "it's you talking!" screamed out.
The key to dealing with seems to be not to deny it but to embrace it and run with it. e.g. "I know that and YOU know that but the picture isn't smart enough to figure it out" OR "Of course, it's me. Pictures can't talk." to which the drawing replies "Sure we do. A picture speaks a thousand words!" http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......orum=182 has some good thoughts on the subject. |

Ax,
Thanks for sending the new CD. The drawing board and Houdini routine are out of this world. IO just start using them and had no idea it would receive such a postive reaction from my audiences. I hope it is ok to give a 'pat on the back' here. Max |

I was surprised to find out that Sean makes the Ultimate Sketch Pad for lefties also. I have one, and I love it. As for the kid's comment, you'll get that from a kid no matter how good you are. I've seen several different pads, but I like this one best. The best part is when you hand out the sheet at the end. It blows them away.

I just had a kid say, "It's coming from you," to which I responded, "Of course, drawings can't talk, but shhh, don't tell him, he doesn't know he's not real."
