I'm almost finished building my Cardiographic, but I have one concern before I start trying this out in shows. The fishing line I am using seems very visible. I am using a higher test than Martin recommends for now, but I am unsure that even the 5 lb test will be invisible under normal conditions where the audience is a few feet away.
I am thinking about using white thread instead. Has anyone had any issues or concerns with this? |

I have never had a problem with my line showing....of course, I bought mine from Tannen's many years ago, but the line is pretty visible.....never have had it seen, though. If you hold it right, that shouldn't be a problem anyway. As for using thread, it would have to be very, very strong.....the last thing you would want would be to have it break at the wrong time. Though I did buy mine, after using it awhile, I put it away and got it back out after about a year.....the gimmick card had been put together with some sort of glue that turned the paper an ugly brown in places.....I wound up taking mine completely apart and remaking the gimmick plate, as well as the front page.....the line has held up, and I have used it for over 100 shows. Make sure your card will be able to rise without too much friction....I used a little powder on mine to make the action smoother, plus it cuts down on the wear. Good luck with yours; this is a great effect that always goes over well with an audience.

The problem with any thread is the shadow.. not necessarily the thread.. but why is the thread showing on your pad anyway? It should be running BEHIND the front page.. not in front of it..

The thread is never seen when I do the routine, as makeupguy says, it should be behind the front page and never in sight of the audience. PM me if you are having trouble getting it set up right and I'd be happy to offer some help. Good luck with it, this is a great trick and well worth any effort you need to put in to get it up and running!

I don't see how the thread should be an issue. If it is built according to the instructions and performed properly, you should be able to use bright red string and still not have it show.

To clarify, in my message, I didn't mean to imply that the line would show....I am the only one that could see it, and that is only during the set-up, not the performance. The only place the line shows is in the back. That's what I meant by it is visible, to ME, but if held right, the audience will not see a thing. Like Mike said, you could use bright red and still not have it show if it is done correctly.

Thank you for the replys (and PMs). Makeupguy is correct - I had the dang thing set up wrong! I watched that DVD over and over and somehow missed the important information that the thread runs behind the cover sheet.
All is fine now thanks to the magic Café. I appreciate your help guys. |

I am thinking about purchasing the Martin Lewis DVD and making my own cardiographic set up. What amount of time can I expect to spend putting this together? Thanks

I have found fishing line to be unnecessary and actually harder to work with. I find fishing line kind of stiff and making knots with it very difficult. I use a thick white thread. My wife says it's a special thick thread for crafts like teddy bear making. It is very easy to knot and work with and very sturdy. On the white back of the board you wouldn't see it unless you were one foot away.
I have not had to peplace this thread in four years. |

As far as time to make: I have had to go back and re-do some of the parts because I made them a little off at first, and the card was coming out improperly. I'm going to look for another magnet too. Wish I could get this done.

I have nearly completed my cardiographic set-up, the only thing I am missing is the M******c R**g. Does anyone have any ideas on where I might be able to find one?
Thanks |

Walmart sells a 1/2" solid one in the craft dept, I just drilled a hole through it and it's worked fine. It comes in a pack of 5 or 6 for just a few bucks.

Finally started doing this in shows. I knew it would go over well, but I was still shocked by the effect it had on the audience. Glad I spent the time to make (and re-make) it.
Here are a couple tips for construction: I used a ziplock bag for the "slide" instead of the envelope. It works very well. I made mine in 9X11 and it works great. I couldn't find a "ring magnet" so I glued a bent washer onto the back of a solid magnet and ran the line through that. Making the moving card piece longer will help keep it straight as it rises. (I had problems with it on my prototype model) |

That's a great tip for keeping the card straight.

I just bought a couple of these ring magnets from a hobby shop.
After much soul searching about a signature, I decided not to have one.

Never thought of the ziplock bag, maybe I'll try that when my current one needs replacing.
As for card going up straight, I didn't bother with it. Mine went up and slants to the left. I decided to keep it like that, which for my taste looks a little better than going up straight. |

I always wanted to build my own (I bought one from Martin) but I could never understand where to get the Pads. Doesn't one paper have to be thinner than the other?? Or does it not matter? Maybe I am just thinking too much into this.

I made one a while back from the instructions on his DVD. You can just use a standard sketch pad. The paper does not need to be a different thickness.
