I call myself Australia's Honest Con Man and I have a huge collection of scams and deceptions and I almost fell for this one...
TKO NOTICE: Compromised Accounts - eBay Registration Suspension - Dear Nicholas, In an effort to protect your eBay account security, we have suspended your account until such time that it can be safely restored to you. We have taken this action because your password may have been compromised. Sometimes this happens when members respond to an email asking for personal information. Although those emails appear to come from eBay, they are really sent by people attempting to gain access to your account. Although we cannot disclose our investigative procedures that led to this conclusion, please know that we took this action in order to maintain the safety of your account. Please change the password that you use on the EMAIL account that you have registered to your eBay account. Make sure that it is also different from the password that you use on your eBay account. By doing this we can ensure that you are the only one that can access any further communication we may have with you. Once you have taken steps to secure your email, please fill the following form for restoring access to your account. You can reach the Restore Form by viewing the page below: http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/isgw-accou......ing.html Programs that block pop-up windows may prevent you from accessing Restore Form. If this is the case, you may be able to temporarily disable the program or configure the program to allow pop-ups on the eBay site in order to use Restore Form. Additionally, Restore Form may not work with some web browsers. If you continue to experience difficulties, you may be able to use Live Help by updating your browser to the most recent version or by using a different program to access the eBay site. If you are unable to contact eBay through Restore Form after taking these steps, respond directly to this message to request assistance. We will contact you by email after we have received your response. Please be aware that there may be a delay in responses sent by email. In order to handle your concern as quickly and efficiently as possible, we encourage you to contact us through Restore Form if you are able to do so. Regards, SafeHarbor Department eBay Inc. |

Glad that you caught onto it as a scam before it was too late Nicholas.
An important note for anyone receiving e-mails from sites like ebay, Paypal, etc. If they say that there is something important that needs to be done to your account, don't click on the link that's in the e-mail. Open a new browser window, and manually go to the site by typing in the site's primary address and logging into your account normally. Something else to look at in some of the links that show up in e-mails... Often sites like ebay and Paypal with have pages secrued where you have to type in important info. These will usually show up as HTTPS in the address, not just HTTP. Just a couple of things to help stay secure. Kevin

If you go to the ebay home page they list the legit letters they send out.

EVERYTIME I got one of these and called Ebay or Paypal about the message they said they knew nothing about it.
I have both toll free numbers nearby and only respond to such Ebay and Paypal messages by phone. My last call to Paypal, the agent said "Mr. Stewart, we will NEVER ask you, via e-mail, for any personal/sensitive info. such as account name, pass word, password re-set, or anything about your account as WE ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING!". The fact that they've yet to admit to sending any such messages shows you how much fraud there is and how persistent such types can be. |

Be leary of the Paypal reciept that is circulating. It says you have purchased a " digital camera". ( which of course you didn't ) It makes you think someone has hacked your account. It then offers you a button to click to cancel the order and get a refund. Clicking that will most likely download a virus.

ANY message that supposedly comes from Ebay or Paypal, I immediately forward to spoof@ebay.com, or spoof@paypal.com. They will in very short order let you know the legitimacy of the email.

I knew something was amiss as I don't wear a watch and haven't purchased one for myself or another in years! And yes, within the bona fide looking paypal message (complete with paypal logo) is the "dispute" button which takes you to an unsecure page which gets right down to business and states "In order to maintain the high security of your information we need the following". They then ask for user name and password etc. As soon as I mentioned it to the paypal agent she began laughing telling me it's been around for a loooooooooong time and a great tool for "phishing" account information. In this case it doesn't hit you with a virus, but worse, takes your account information and hits you with a zero balance account. |

I was not so lucky...Got nailed by this about two years ago. Someone in Madrid racked up $1600.00 to my bank account.
That was a bad day. But the bank covered it all without doing too much long term damage. All I can say is that I hope they did something fun with the money, bought a leather jacket, went to a movie or took their girl on a date, bought a puppy for their mom...Something! I'd hate to think my foolishness funded a drug habit. That would just tick me off... Gwyd |

Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Sorry to break up the fun. Just thought I would let you know of another Ebay scam I have received a few times. You will receive an email which looks legit, stating 'Question From Buyer', or something to that effect. It is a very general email usually asking the current state of the item you are selling, and sometimes the price to buy your item outright, avoiding bidding. I'm assuming that if you go to reply it will ask for your password and username. On closer inspection you will notice that the 'Date Sent' is usually one, two or even three years old. However the page setup does look like a regular 'Question from Buyer' email. Don't be caught out by this one.

I know we're too smart for this but..... My mother in law is a bank teller in a small town. A regular customer came in with a large business check. She went through all of the procedures to verify it. He withdrew a few thousand dollars in the form of a money order (which his account had prior to the check). Later the check turned out to be a fraud. Apparently someone bought a boat off of eBay from him. But they were only able to send this large check. He sent them the change. Doh!

You off to "send them the change" when (and IF) the check clears! End of problem.
