What coin magic effects play well in a parlor/stage setting, and to music, without patter?
thanks, |

I would say go with coins across or the 3 Fly. I've seen it done with a few people and it looks and sounds great!
Where I go, so do my coins.....

I do what is basically a one coin routine (a combo of Roth/Slidini) to an upbeat song. Every time I consider taking it out of my show, my friends comment on how much they like it.

When I do table or restaurant magic, cocktails etc, obviously I must do my coin magic with patter...just because these are social venues, and you have to meet people.
But my real pleasure is to work to music! Every time I can think of it, I try to react with the music, and it works very well... |

A related question is what music do you perform to? I'm probably looking for something classical, but not necessarily.

I saw you mention miser's dream in another thread.
I would recommend trying to do that routine. I only did it once to music but in a close up situation. it played pretty well.i don't think you can go wrong with this. I learned it from Bobo and am very satisfied. good luck ! -Matt

Joshua, it looks like you have a lot of experience performing magic. The way you ask your question, I imagine you don't have a lot of experience performing magic with music - I'll go with that premise. You should use music that moves you, like the way you were moved by Ray Charles' music mentioned in one of the articles on your website. I suggest playing around a lot with various musics that move you. Then find out, from someone you trust, if you CAN move to the music. If not, get some lessons, or don't do it. The unfortunate truth about magic and music is that most folks don't know what they're doing - but, they think they do.
As far as repertoire, play around with some of Chris Kenner's stuff - I thought some of it fit nicely with music. As far as musical repertoire, don't take anyone's recommendations - that's got to come from your soul. It either speaks to you, or it doesn't.

A dream routine of mine: create a coin routine with music AND spécial sound effects, illustrating every coin travel/vanish/appearrance with a corresponding sound...
I think this could enhance the magic greatly (as an example, I will cite a J.Carney sponge ball appearance, where he snaps his finger at the moment of ball production: magic+sound=more magic!!) |

Hey lawrens, take a look at our very own Ben Proudfoot. He's already doing what you say with coins and other things. He's big on using music with magic and does it well for a young Magi. You guys sit back and take a look. Enjoy! -MB

Dan,
Thanks for the thoughts. Great advice. Luckily, with this show, I have a director, magic consultant and artistic advisor (as well as set designer and lighting designer). I also have a talented neighbor who has offered to write some original music for me if I can give her an idea of the type of music I want. I think I'll work up a routine and show it to her in some form, and we can take it from there. I'm taking this much time trying to figure out the music because I positively hate most music that magicians use to perform with. You know what I mean? Anyway, thanks for the advice. You're right that I have quite a bit of experience, but none performing to music! That will change in February with this show. Josh I wis Quote: On 2006-09-15 19:35, Dan Magyari wrote: |

It is one of those things you will have to play with to get the timing down to match the music. Personally, I like mello jazz to work with. Good luck

Joshua, what a great opportunity. The only other thing I would suggest is seeking out the writings of Margaret Steele. She is not only a magician, but a sophisticated musician. She has some very insightful thoughts on the marriage of music and magic. Some may be found in the Mystery School book of McBride. She has worked extensively with both Mystery School and Bob Fitch and his workshops. If you cannot find her writings, seek her out personally. I'm sure she can help you with your project.
Good luck.
