Now before I start, I know there are those of you who think that these posts are set up as some sort of advertising campaign for various products, but this most sincerely is not that at all. This is just to give praise for this fine version of this prop.
I ordered the new version of Hip Hop Magician last week, and I um-ed and ah-ed whether to get it or not as I already have the original version, which plays amazingly well in all my shows. But I decided to part with the extra cash for this new version and I am so pleased that I did. Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with the old version, quite the opposite it is a great version of the Hip Hop routine, but this new one is something else! The (what some might think) small improvements on this new version make such a huge difference. The cabinets are slightly thinner and therefore easier to handle. The steal is as smooth as silk, and you no longer have to worry about the gimmick falling out. I used to quickly hide the cabinets out of sight after the steal, now I do not have to worry. Believe me this really is excellent. I HIGHLY recommend anyone wanting a hip hop routine to get these, you will not be disappointed. Whether you have the original version or not!! Now before anyone goes off on one, I will point a few things out, No, I am not on Chance's payroll, as I live in the UK, No, he has not asked me to write anything on the message board, No, he has no idea I am even writing this, No, I am not an investor in Wolf's Magic (worst luck!) and No, I have no other affiliations with Wolf's Magic other than the fact that I enjoy quality props in my shows. I just thought I should voice my opinions on a really good investment!! Marcus |

I've seen the new version as well as the old version, and Marcus is right. There have been big improvements. Most importantly, the finish is extremely durable now.

The previous finish was durable - the improved version is EXTREMELY durable.

I offered to trade my old one in with Chance, but he didn't respond! I was thinking of the original one as a temporary lease...heh heh.

Hi there Marcus, I think that the issues of the past are resolved as far as the few that grumbled about Chances props and payroll and such. I know Chance is quite proud of the small upgrades he made.I will pass along the comments to him. Brian

I'm so confused! If I buy something will a 'new improved' version come out a year later? This is why it took me almost 20 years to by a freakin' computer!

Hi there Steve, I talked with Chance and he assured me this was one and only time he has made an upgrade in the 5 years of being in buisness. He does a ton of R/D on his props and this one and only time he found an improvement he wanted to add. The older version is still a great prop and in my opinion superior to anything that is currently available. I hope this answers your question Steve. Brian

Marcus, I'm a little curious - did you get a good price for your original set? It sounds like the "improvements" are fairly minimal, do they really justify buying the same prop again? You do say that the original version plays amazingly well in all your shows. Does the new version play any better? Surely as far as the audience is concerned, it's exactly the same? I'm a big fan of Chance Wolf, but I can't imagine buying the same prop twice, I'd just work with the prop I already have, and spend the money on something completely new.
By the way, Chance has made small improvements on other items. My ABC machine was one of the first made, and it has decals (stickers) for the lettering, but I believe the letters are now made of the same material as the rest of the prop, and therefore slightly raised. I shan't be buying a new one just because of that! |

Hi there Potty, I think what is meant here is an improvemnet to the gimmick not mearly a different material or different color. Brian

Hi Potty
I have not sold my original HHM, and I do not intend to. My original one will go into my collectors corners, along with many of my Jack Hughes collection. As for does it play any better, I doubt it, the concept and my routine will remain the same. I have only just received it so I have not tried it out in a show yet. But the handling is much better. I was always very concious of discarding the cabinets so soon after the reveal of the rabbit, it did not follow the same pattern as the rest of the routine, where the cabinets remain in view. And in my mind there was a difference there, and therefore rouse suspicion. Also the handling at the end of the routine by now not having to finger steal is another bonus as it is consistent again with the previous routine. I can now finish holding the cabinets in a natural way, therefore any suspicion is now gone, not only from possibly the audiences mind but from mine also. When I watch magic shows, where there is inconsistency, there is suspicion. For me, that tells me that this is where something fishy has gone. I am amazed that noboday has thought of this before, like you say it seems such a small improvement but for me anyway, it really adds that extra impact at the end that nothing is different from before. If you can find someone who has got a new version, and see the difference for yourself you will be surprised. I was really gob smacked (that is a British term for amazed!)that such a smallish change could make such a difference. As for doing upgrades, I do not see the issue. Surely in magic and in other areas, it is always better to improve on something if you can. I do in my shows all the time. If something that I have done impromptu works then it stays in for the next show. Most magic tricks are just an improvements on something else before anyway, the Mini Cube illusion is just an improvement on the Zig Zag, so why use a Mini Cube when you can use a Zig Zag, surely upgrading and improvement should be what our art is about. If not then I would have given up years ago!! Marcus |

My problem here is your description of the improved version implies the original was a clumsy, poorly designed, couldn't be handled in a natural manner, and the presentation was faulty to the point that it gave away the secret. From what I understand is Wolf has very high standards and either the original was very bad compared to this drastically improved version or you are overselling the new version (overselling as in overstating). Now in the hippity hop rabbits the original had problems with the handling of the cabinets at the end. They came out with a mini version with a certain attribute to the cabinet, we shall say mineral, which improved the handling of THOSE cabinets. I would like to point out that this change satisfied the mind of the magician because I've never, ever, had any spectator guess what was really going on.
I will now ask this and I would appreciate a simple answer. Are you saying that the change in design erased a problem you had with the handling or are you saying that a poorly designed and made product was made functional? Steve V |

Steve, simply said the original design was not poor in any way. Chance just came up with an improvement that made it better and decided to add this in. He could have left this out and nobody would have noticed or cared. I think your looking at this as a flaw in the original not an improvement to a solid product. I hope this helps. Brian

Steve V,
I have not used the Hip Hop Magicians but I did get an opportunity to examine both versions and experiment with them. The original version was extremely well made and worked very well. The new one uses a different material for the construction so the walls are thinner and even more durable. The key performance difference is that the new version uses an ingenious method to do the secret part of the trick. It doesn't mean the earlier version is flawed. It worked quite well. It's just that now it works even better. Chance just found a better way to accomplish it. (The new versions also cost more now.) Michael |

Actually, Brian, I am trying to get across that there isn't a fault with the original but that the fellow by overstating the difference as being so grand is implying such. I would say that Wolf, being a perfectionist, found a subtle change that he felt improved an already excellent item and put it in even though it wouldn't be noticed by other than someone who had both versions.

Is the one shown on the site the "new" version? There's nothing stating improvements were made from an older version.

I went back and re-read Marcus' posts and I think he's very clear. He is saying that the new version has thinner cabinets which makes them easier to handle, and have something in them (perhaps like the Micro Rabbit version) that keeps the gimmicks in place. Sounds like Chance has tweaked an already excellent product to make it better - that's all I read into this post.
I really don't know why you're taking this on, Steve. Those improvements sound pretty good to me...I don't see them as overstatements. Ron |

I asked if he was overstating the far superiority of the new version. I have no dog in this race, if you say the original is far less in application than the improved one then I believe you.
