Most audiences find them as boring as Chinese ribbon dancing. ***!! And I thought my routine that combined a 27 linking ring routine and Chinese ribbon dancing was killing 'em! Back to the drawing board!

The old masters used a dozen or so rings, but it does not seem that the routines were all that much longer than contemporary ones. At a certain "critical mass" the effect becomes something different. It's like a deck of cards for stage work. When you've only got four, the magic becomes very direct and focused, like Dr. Daley's last trick. (do stage guys talk to card guys?) As you get past an easily countable number of rings, the effect can become looser, and more interactive, like a multiple selection routine. (Have a card guy explain it to you)
Obviously, the greater number allows items to be more easily switched, added, or subtracted, be they cards or rings. I believe Chung Ling Soo's routine used many, many rings which were tossed into the audience (actually to an assistant in the audience who handed them out) as they were linked. They were then tossed back onstage, to be picked up by another assistant (a great magician never bends down to pick up his own stuff, you know) who was free to add to the examined rings, if you know what I mean. Two observations: First, the large number of rings seems to suggest that you will be handing them out for examination. It really is given to an interactive routine. Imagine Whit's routine with four people on stage! Second, just because you have all these rings doesn't mean you have to link them all together. At a certain point, the audience knows that would be tedious. You could introduce all the rings, link and toss, retrieve, then just take a few, say three or four, and end with them. While you're doing that, the rest can be switched for a linked chain. Good luck with it. Don't practice in the apartment after 10:00 at night.

One of the old vaudeville performers used 16 rings in his routine. He would start his routine by showing the key ring. "This was the way the ancient Chinese magicians used 500 years ago, but today I will not stoop to such trickery."
He would throw the ring to the floor with a dull ring and then he would remind the audience that solid rings sound like a pealing church bell. Bold, but excellent psychology. Darryl the Wizard

Roy Davenport winds up with a huge number of rings (I didn't count them) and whirling the chain around filling the stage but until that final segment he does use fewer rings.

Speaking of Zen, why not do a "no ring" routine? You get the audience into whatever state Zen folks get their audiences into, and make them believe they are seeing something truly amazing...
Much less expensive, too. You could even have them custom made and still have money left in your budget. Amos McCormick

Zensational idea.
No. A magician from Viet Nam did the rings with a bed sheet over him (rings on outside, he on inside).

I don't know. With 16 rings you could do a four ring routine four times or an eight ring routine twice.

I don't know why he did it, but it was very mystical looking, great lighting and music...
Hey, modern dance, Cirque du Soliel, etc., etc. break new ground. We have to see and understand it.

I like that idea. You could go into a torn and restored bed sheet routine. Or you could make yourself disappear; this would really be handy just in case the ring routine went over like a rock…

The massive display of 16 rings whipping overhead sounds pretty cool to me! Truly the linking rings are absolutely one of the greatest, most mystifying, over exposed, badly done in public, cheaply made and sold, perfect pieces of magic in all of history!!
Truly with the rings, we see trends, but everything old is new again when a fresh spin is placed on an old link! Try new numbers. Try new pitches.

When my daughter joined the act several years ago, we adapted Irland's 9-ring version and used it as the basis for a two-person routine.
For years I'd complained you really need three hands to do justice to Ireland's ideas. Now I could finally see how an extra pair of hands could add add to the effect. |

As olde as it is, and as often as it has been done, and as many slum sets have been sold... IT IS STILL ONE OF THE GREATEST FEATS OF MAGIC EVER.
PERIOD :donut3:

I use four rings close-up and nine on stage. Added a LK to set of 8. The main reason I use more than four rings on stage is to get many more audience participants, one per ring, so I give two rings to a pair of kids and three rings to a group of three. Then I try to encourage team work to get them to unlink. Instead of the tug of war that always starts. Then unlinked sets can be switched under the guise of switching groups.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

The Amazing Jonathan uses two rings.
Neither is a key. Yet he performs the mystery of the Chinese Linking Rings. It is unbelievable. Nathan

I think I was ripped off! You say the standard set has 8 rings. Mine only had 7.96875 rings. I'm going back to the shop to get the rest of this ring!
Many different combinations will work as long as you have some definite reason, beyond just wanting to work with the most rings ever. And if you take the time to make your routine build from point to point. --Dan Harlan |

Dan, From your numbers I can only conclude that your key ring is too tight. My key is 0.95965. I think Cellini's is 0.91045. As for the locking key. It is 1.00000. |
