Title: The Deck That Shuffles Itself
Presented by: Dominique Duvivier Medium: cards Arena: close up, table preferred but can be done in the hands Ability level: all Available: any shop, distributed by Murphy’s Magic Cost: $35ish Most full deck items concern me. Usually you get a quickie and there is no real routine involved. I didn’t know what to expect with The Deck That Shuffles Itself but I know that Mr. Duvivier is a very creative magician who works as a magician not just a magic producer. I, as always, read the instructions before I ever looked at the deck. One thing, keep the deck in the order you get it! You’ll have to have it stacked a specific way to do this routine, re stacking isn’t a big deal though. I will say that I wondered how a deck shuffled itself but as I read the clearly written three pages of instructions I found myself not believing what was to come. Let us look at the effect. You open a deck of Bicycle cards and ribbon spread them to show that you have a normal deck of card. You then pull an invisible (mime it) deck out of the deck tabled and do a riffle shuffle, again this is mimed, and you place the invisible deck back into the real deck. This will make sense once you read the instructions. You then spread the deck and now you have a deck that is mixed half face up and half face down! You close the deck and once again pull the invisible (I call it the spirit of the deck in my presentation) and deal two stacks and combine them to put all the cards in the spirit deck in the correct orientation, put it back into the real deck and spread it, all the cards are straight again. Next you make a move like you are stamping the cards, spread and all the cards are now the same! You toss out that faulty spirit deck and the real deck shows to be all different cards, a regular deck. You then show all the back are just backs as well. As a kicker you shake the box after putting the cards in and the cover looks like it has crushed together. What you read is what you get. This is an absolutely fascinating thing to see and just doing it for yourself is cool to watch. The deck does all that I said and the visual is great and people will want to touch it and pray to it. Obviously you cannot let them see the cards because this is a waaaaay gimmicked deck. I have to hand it to the mind of Mr. Duvivier to come up with this because it is diabolical as heck. The presentation is nice and it is a fooler. The only issue is it may be almost too good and you will have to some how keep people from getting hold of that deck. I would suggest dropping the kicker ending with the card box and switching in another bicycle deck. Just a basic pocket switch would work, you place it in the pocket, someone demands to see the cards and you are done you can pull out a standard deck and toss it to ‘em. You may want to do this as an after thought after a set of card tricks because you do not want to attempt any other routines with this deck, that is not going to work, so you need to have a reason to open a deck and put it away at the end. You get a well made deck of cards, a good routine, and a very visual and freaky item to show people. Good stuff and something you card guys or gaff nuts will want to look into. |

Steve,
I bought this about 8 years ago from Jeff Busby. It's a grat trick but it's so astounding that everyone wants to inspect the deck--and unless you're prepared to do a deck swich, I'm not comfortable showing it. Have you tested this out yet and if so, how do you end it? Arnie

Like you said, you have to do a deck switch. It really does get people worked up.

I personnaly use it along with another deck in a personal routine.
I manualy change the normal deck and 'automaticaly' it affects the other deck (Duvivier's). Of course during the routine I have to do several deck switches, but it is rather convincing. At the end, both decks are all queens of hearts, and the audience can check the one way force one, not Duvivier's but they never ask. |

How about a "Blizzard" ending, showing it was all an illusion?.. ..

I saw the video and wanted to see what others thought of it... amazing... I'd almost be tempted to have a "pull" of some type that could be used to make the deck disappear. Then they are not only impressed with the breathtaking card routine, but are also destroyed by the fact that the cards just disappeared like "ghost cards". Then you don't have to do a swi#$^...

It may have been amazing back in 2006 but there are far better gaff decks out there nowadays. How about the shuffled deck that puts itself back into new-deck-order? Much stronger IMO.

Maybe you can find a good deck switch in the book "The Art of Switching Decks", comes with DVD demonstrations.
