Does anyone know the Thurston's 3 rules in magic? Since I can not find the "original" statement about it, I'll use my own words:
1. Do not say what you are going to do beforehand 2. Do not repeat the effect to the same people/at the same time 3. Do not reveal the secrets of the magic It is well-known in my country. And I'm curious about the source and the reality. If the rules really exist, could someone help to list the source and the original statement? Thanks, Jason |

There is no Thuston's 3 Rules. A Japanese magician wrote it long ago.

There are some intelligent interpretations of the ideas discussed in The Art of War as regards conjuring.

Kato-san,
Is the article available on the Internet? I'm curious about who created "Thurston's 3 Rules". Thanks, Jason |

To anyone who is interested, I think I found the article that Kato-san referred to.
It's written in Japanese: http://plaza.harmonix.ne.jp/~k-miwa/magi......on2.html Jason |

Yes, you found the information.
However, we yet need to find who first stated "Thurston's 3 Rules". Hideo Kato |

I agree, I also thought the 3rd rule was "practice to perfection"

I believe he published several books to discredit Pinetti, where some 10-20 rules for magicians can first be found. It's been awhile since I read his work, so I'm not sure about the exact number. Nevertheless, that's where your "Thurston's Rules" come from. |

Sorry, I just checked, and it seems that Mssr. Decremps published his rules almost a century before I said above.

Aren't there some tricks which require you to say what you'll do beforehand? eg Larry Jennings' "Impossible" which requires a number of steps to be taken behind the magician's back. Also, I'm not even sure of rule number 2 in all cases (particularly for 'sucker' effects). HOWEVER, rule number 3 should be a fundamental rule to us all. Even when Penn and Teller reveal a part of a trick, they always have a kicker which remains a secret. Lynn ps. yes practice practice practice
