So during my day job I came across a recipe for a substance lovingly called Oobleck. It's like a slime but appears as a solid and liquifies to touch.
The recipe is as follows: 1/2 box of cornstarch 1/2 cup of water (add water if needed) It's one of those recipes you need to play with a little bit to get the right consistancy. Why am I posting this? Well I'm trying to think of some cool ideas to use this substance in a show and I figured the bizarrist would be the best place to pick brains on it. I encourage people to mix some up and play with it. For those of you that are tactile, it can entertain you for hours. Let me know what you think.

This means that when a small amount of force is used, it acts like a liquid, but when more force is applied, it acts like a solid. You can slowly put a spoon in Oobleck, but it is impossible to stir it quickly. Equally fun and interesting is another Non-Newtonian fluid: Glurch, which is a polymer that the children can actually watch polymerize, very similar to Silly Putty. A fun effect is to stretch it out flat and use it for a "lid" to a cup, then see what happens over the next few minutes. Glurch: water white glue sodium borate food coloring There are actually two solutions for Glurch. The first is 50% water, 50% white glue and food coloring (if desired- obviously not necessary). The second is a nearly saturated solution of sodium borate. Standard Glurch Solution #1 a 3:4 mixture of white glue and water (e.g. 3/4 cup of white glue to one cup of water) Solution #2 Saturated water/borax. Add enough borax that it won't dissolve any more. This is approximately 3 tablespoons of Borax to 1 cup of water. Directions Add some food coloring (for effect only, not required to make the glurch work) to one of the two solutions then mix 3:1 of the first solution to the second. For example, 6 tablespoons of #1 to 2 tablespoons of #2. Stir together quickly or you may get an very dense blob in the middle. Stir/knead the glurch until it is of a uniform consistency. Or, since 3 tsp = 1 tbsp, use tablespoons to measure #1 and the same number of teaspoons to measure #2. POINTER (If the Glurch is runny, add a few grains of salt) Standard Oobleck Oobleck is not a precise recipe - it is basically a thick solution of water and corn starch - with food coloring to suite yourself. Put together roughly equal amounts of each. If you can stir it, add more corn starch. The thicker the solution the harder it will become to stir the solution together. You may have to leave it to soak together. Pick it up in the spoon and you'll have chunks, but as the tension releases you'll see them go back to liquid. POINTER If the Oobleck is too crumbly add a few drops of water. To make small amounts of Ooobleck use the following recipe: 1) Approximately 50 ml cornstarch (3Tbs. and 1 tsp.) 2) Approximately 25 ml water (1 Tbs. and 2 2tsp.) Procedure: Pour the water into a cup. Add cornstarch a little at a time while stirring. When the mixture becomes too thick to stir, remove from the cup

All this is very interesting. But what I want to know is why weren't there teachers like Sylver Fyre when I was a kid?

I can think of a variety of Lovecraftian uses.... I would suggest also mixing in green food dye and flourescent liquids.

That just tickled my funny bone for some reason. * Use deep red food coloring for vampire blood; it displays bizarre properties; it is, afterall, the source of their power. * Make a "melting" eyeball out of it, which can drizzle down your cheek. * Alien lifeform ?

Thanks Marvello for the new lesson idea.
yes I am a certified art teacher but currently running a before and after school program where we do fun activities while hiding learning in them. The recipe that called for 1/2 a box of corn starch didn't specify, but I used a 16oz box and again played with the amount of water, sort of a feel it out thing. I'm really more of a hands on kind of gal. Mystician, Ewww....melting eyeball?!? *does a little girlie dance* Yuckie! Thinking this recipe would work well in stage blood effects, for a slow ooze. Wonder if it would move through tubing... but I'm guessing it wouldn't. Great ideas!! Keep them comming! And if anyone decides to whip up a batch I'd love to hear your responses/thoughts on it.

Thanks Rev. I've been enjoying all the love and support you've been leaving on my page... I want an evil duckie of my own! Needless to say I don't share my performance life with my education life. Too scared of being discriminated against. I will have to make a batch up and try the bubble thing... And yes for those of you with kids... this will entertain them for hours and you will look so cool in their eyes! (as if being evil wasn't enough to do that!)

Support totally ignores me, and I've sent numerous emails via their forms, only one of which they "answered", which was a form letter of sorts saying "read the FAQ", which of course I did and it isn't relevant. This may not be up to Oobleck standards, and it's non-non-Newtonian, but I seem to rememeber a drink called "Liquid Brain".
It's Baileys and...something green (Klingon "What are we drinking" Scotty: It's green")You give them a slight mix and serve while it's still spinning. It should be fun to serve to the kids. This is an example of a "joke" for those already composing an angry reply. I would never serve my kids alcohol. We have a rule- "No drinking in the dungeon"

Might I also suggest "Moon Blob" by our good friends at Edmund? This stuff is very bizzare and acts as if it's alive, even crawling out of a bowl it's put in! Eerie:
